I was reading the wccupda2.dat thread and something interesting came to mind.
When you edit in a different directory and then compile an update file then copy the update file over to the WG directory and while the bbs is running you apply an update.
Wouldn't you overwrite all the current user files, bank files, item files, etc. ? You know the files that change from minute to minute due to people collecting cash, and exp and training and buying stuff?
I was just wonder if any of you have tested that part of it.
Cause i would hate to use dat backups from the day before to make changes too just to find out that everything that someone did today didn't stick cause the update file overwrites the current data with the old data.
any info would be great.

JACKAL!! Good question, and I have no bloody clue, but man whats up with yer bbs.. why is it down?
Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
Whenever you apply an update, mud compares it to the dats. If the dats arent what the update sayes they should be, they are reset to what the update sayes. So, if you apply the update from one mud to another, it will overwrite whatever is in that mud. I don't know for sure, but I don't believe the user files are in the update...
Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
i would have say the user files are not included in the update dat only because.. how the hell would you apply a new mod/update from metro.. ??? If you were upgrading from.. ah.. nevermind.. you get my point

Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
the update file includes:
actions
classes
items
messages
monsters
races
rooms
shops
spells
textblocks
I beleive that doing an "Apply an update" and starting the board up (having it run through the update file) are the same thing. Though you do raise a good question. I would have to assume that mud only updates certain parts of the record. Since the records hold many things specific to the current game (like the shops with the items, and the rooms with the current monsters), that's the only thing I can think of.

Thanks for the info syntax... by the way great job on Redux... think there is a way you can add an option to remove a certain dat file from the update?
Cause i'd really hate to overwrite the items in ganghouse shops when updating :)
Thanks

Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
i tried the apply an update option. what i saw: some changes did occur. edits i had made to races and classes went into effect.. but edits i had made to rooms and items did not happen.. lims didnt come onto list.. etc.. i imagine it will happen at a cleanup. so my guess is that the update option doesnt include everything.

Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
Well it looks like all my new stuff did go in.. but lims are still not comin up on lim list... prolly takes a recovery...
Re: HRmmmmm [Archive] - ForumsHQ
no, that is mud itself. the lims don't seem to always show up anymore until they become active somehow. i notice it with legit unedited boards.
