sorry man, this is one of those problems where i'd have to be there to fix it :(

The problem lies in the fact i cant even get into windows 98 on the drive anymore. I replaced the drive because windows was going bad and it was an old ass 4 gig drive (and i just remembered it had 2 partitions, a 3 gig and a 1 gig backup section...

Have your computer load into DOS instead of windows and then copy all the shit you want saved onto the other hdd.



If you cant get it to load into dos first then go into BIOS and set it up to check the cdrom first but make sure you have a win98 cd in the drive.

Then just pick the option to start the computer in DOS mode.

i've got windows XP on one IDE controller with another slot open on its cable, and i have the cd rom on another. I've tried that. they dont see eachother.

boot it up off a dos disk and copy the data that way? you can use xcopy or xcopy32 to copy all the data recursively (subdirectories included). if the drive is NTFS you wont be able to use a regular dos disk, but i wont get into that unless it is.



i know it will set all the files in 8.3 format but at least then you'll have a copy of it.

can we put this in simple to understand english including places where i can find the programs your recomending?

xcopy and xcopy32 are standard dos/windows apps. they should be under c:\windows\command or c:\winnt\command (fdisk is also a standard dos app that should be in that folder).



if you have access to a 98 machine, make a startup disk from the add/remove programs window. for xp create a ms-dos bootup disk by right clicking on the floppy in my computer and selecting format. then select create startup disk.



after you have the disk put on the xcopy tool. type xcopy /? for help on the tool.. the trick is going to be to see if the dos startup disk will mount your XP drive.
