Hard Drive Question [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by Relorian »

Ok, heres the situation. I recently upgraded parts out of a compaq (mainly the Hard drive and the Ram) into a new box. I had problems with the windows so i bought a new hard drive, put a fresh install of Windows XP Pro (non SP1). Now i wire all the parts up correctly, setting the XP 120 GB drive as the Master and the 4 gb Compaq drive as slave. I start to boot up and it always goes into the Compaq drive first. I've set the bios to do the XP drive. I also tried conneecting a Slave Win98 formatted 10 gig drive. Not only is this a Non booting drive, but its set to slave already... but for some reason it tries to boot off the drive. I've replaced my IDE Cable, re-checked the jumper settings and made sure its all wired correctly. Anyone know what the hell my problem is and why this wont seem to work?

will it boot off the 120gb drive without any other drive connected? if not, try getting that workinig before you put other drives into the mix.

Yes, it boots into Win XP just fine with no other drives connected.

did the 120gb drive need any hard drive overlay software or boot magic software, etc, to get the bios to recognize it?

Try switching where each drive is connected on the IDE cable if you are using the same channel.

Double check the bios and verify the order that it is using for the boot device. The BIOS is the only thing I would think would be able to do that.

No, win XP formatted the drive, no problems. And i've triple checked the bios and the cables... all are hooked up right.

odd. the cable they gave me has the master where your slave is. THough i've tried it both ways with no luck. The mobo is an FIC that maxes at a 1 gig AMD chip. As for specific modle. i have a clue it was a freeebie...

yeah set up your drives the way Syntax said... and double check your jumpers on the 120gb drive (should be set to master and plugged into the first slot (end of the cable) on the cable) and the 4gb drive should be set to slave (and connected to the second slot (middle of the cable) on the cable)

Hope you get it resolved!
