I have seen the airing of Ebert & Roper's best of 2005 program twice now. Of their list of 15 I have seen 4 of these movies. I opted to watch two of the lesser known movies, which Ebert raved about, Junebug and Me and You and Everyone We Know. Being a fan of independent films, my favorite indie flick being Like Water for Chocolate, I picked these two movies. I layed in my bed, my notebook computer on my lap, and settled in for two outstanding movies. Much to my dismay, they were not as riviting as Ebert had promised. While the acting in these movies were top notch, the story lines were not anything I could relate to. In my favorite indie flick, while being about a different culture that my own and crudely subtitled, it at least drew you into the story.



In Junebug, the characters were likeable and believeable but as you watch the movie you keep waiting for something to happen, something to bring you closer to the family the movie revolves around. The dynamics of this family is unknown and the characters portray behaviors that indicate important life facts about them, but the movie never reveals these facts to you. You wait to understand this family and at the end you are still left with the unknown. Your questions are not answered and the end isn't really an ending at all, the movie just stops.



In Me and You and Everyone We Know the main characters are beyond different and wierd, they make no sense and the movie is completely unbelievable. From a person who lights his hand on fire while going through a divorce to a girl who is an abstract artist, it makes you ask the question; why am I watching this? The union of all of these characters in a small town is completely unbelievable and absurd. This is not a movie that portrays you, or me, or anyone else we know for that matter. This movie was a waste of my time and money, and I walked away from the movie feeling annoyed and unsatisfied.



While Ebert recommended these movies as a famous movie afficianado, he was dead wrong. After all he voted Constatine as one of the worst movies of 2005. He obviously didn't read the comic books series Hellblazer, of which the movie is based from. Do not trust the best and worst movies of 2005 lists by Ebert and Roper.

I particularly enjoyed their worst of 2005. i can honestly say i've seen each of the movies on each of their worst AND best lists
