megamud problem

Post by Demosthenes »

has anyone experienced this problem before: often when i'm manually directing megamud to run places (less often when i'm manually playing, and almost never - although it does still happen - when it's running a loop) megamud will pop up an error box saying there has been a crash caused by a fatal error writing to the trace file, or something to that effect. next time it happens, i'll post to clarify the exact message, but that's the general wording of it. i've deleted every trace file in all subdirs of megamud, reset my computer, powercycled it, defragged (it had been somewhere around 3 years since my last defrag, so i figured that might be it), and done everything short of re-installing megamud. re-installing mega is such a massive pain that i'm reluctant to do so, because i have it highly customized and it'd probably take me several solid hours of playing with it to get things working as i have them now. anyone have any suggestions, besides suck it up and re-install mega, and if not any advice on how to best keep my configs intact? i know to copy the directories with bbs/char info, obviously, but previously i've had massive trouble actually getting mega to recognize imported paths, and don't remember the exact steps to fool it into loading new stuff without having to re-write all of my custom shit.

Short of an actual solution, since you're at keys when it happens, see if you can try to pin it down to a certain condition that's common to all errors. Since I remember you saying on Morbid that this seems to be happening more and more, maybe it'll let you find a pattern to it -- maybe it only happens as mega goes to auto-bless and you manually move a room to a room with a mob in it, so it's mid bless and wanting to engage combat (something like that).

As for the reinstall help, I have no idea. You're the one who tells ME how to do things right :)

i've seen no consistency whatsoever to this happening - it's happened when i've moved the mouse to the toolbar but not even clicked anything yet, happened when mega's moved into a room in the course of running a path i've set it, it's even happened when i was in the middle of typing. oh, and thanks for the 'solution' DD, but you don't even comprehend what i'm saying, since this FATAL ERROR causes megamud to CRASH, ie closing the program and sometimes causing errors even when i re-open it, and leading to memory leaks that screw up the operation of the rest of my computer. i'm sure you didn't comprehend any of that either, but that's ok, cause i don't expect much useful input out of you regardless.

i've attached a copy of the trace file, if anyone thinks they can understand it enough to do anything useful with it. i know it's greek to me. :p

I read your trace file, and I know exactly what your problem is. I had the exaxtly the same problems with 1.03t as soon as I upgraded to 1.03u problems went poof.

Occasionally I get a crash when a board crashes, or mega hangs after a death. But I just close the offending window and reopen it, with no problems.

hmmm alright, i'll upgrade i suppose, hopefully it won't kill too many of my settings. :p funny that this just started popping up recently, it happened but very rarely before this.

try this, make a backup of c:\megamud\(all sub folders)

do the upgrade of 1.03u (if) there is a problem you have all your settings and shit backed up, and just copy your backup over top 1.03u

actually, was far easier than i thought, i wasn't sure if 1.03u had any dependencies or if megamud did period, but i just copied the exe over after installing 1.03u fresh in another dir. thanks anyways tho.
