Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:



1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:



network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests



Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.



2. Alter the entries as follows:



Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"



Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"



Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.



3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.



If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Worked great for me.

FYI: at my work these settings actually degraded my performance in loading pages. often pages would load incomplete. for example, www.bestbuy.com simply would not load all of the images and the menu roll overs didn't work. I even tried setting the maxrequests to 2 and it still wouldn't load all of the images but the menu at least loaded. disabling pipelining made everything load as expected. i don't know if it has something to do with high volume sites combined with high volume traffic through our switches.

I just tried the above link at work using firefox and the proposed speedup and it loaded rather nicely for me. If bestbuy.com was especially congested that will account for failure to load images from time to time.

bestbuy.com was just an example. it was happening on numerous websites. now that i think about it, it would even do it on very low traffic sites that now display fine. i think my network at work is the culprit. i work at a school district so there could be 1000+ machines hitting the internet at the same time.
