I am trying to connect 2 linksys B routers..same model and version, same firmware...I have access to one of them physically..but the other router...I dont really have access too...physically



my laptop can connect to both routers but when they are both plugged in I connect to the nearest one and cant see the one further away.



I have changed the settings on the one I have physical access to 192.168.1.2, disabled the dhcp and thats all the linksys tech support 24/7 line said to do..but the routers dont see each other...and I have reset the other one to factory defaults(It was already on them...I just did it to double check) SSID are the same...should I just buy/make a new antenna for my B router to reach the other one?

Try switching the Host router from Gateway to Router. :shrug:

I tried that...but with the newest firmware you dont have to switch them between routers/gateways..they took the option out! I even called Linksys support..they said it will work..could it be because the other router is at a higher elevation because to even connect with my laptop It has to be in the RIGHT spot..I am not talking area..I am talking to the inch lol. Shouldnt a router have better sight? Or shouldI just buy bigger antennas for my router? :(

The problem is, it's not a lynksys router, it's a cheap bottom of the barrel Cisco router, with lynksys tags. New lynksys are such garbage Since they were bought by Cisco.



Your not the first person to have this problem, I have lots of IT Admin friends, and 1/2 of them have dumped Lynksys and gone with Netgear or D-Link.



My neighbour downstairs bought a new Lynksys, and I get better reception with my laptop, than he does with his desktop (which is 10ft away). my Apt is above thiers, my laptop is 15' up, and a room away (12') and I get a "very good" connection, yet he just gets a "good" connection.

It's not the router he is using, is problably the cheap wireless card he has in his desktop. I have a Linksys Access Point, my laptop can pick up the signal very well outside, down the stairs and half way accross the parking lot. I purchased a very cheap 'AirLink' wireless-g network card to test out in my desktop. I am within 10' and in line of site of the access point and the signal says its 'bad' and I constantly loose connection. So it's the type of wireless card you have in the system. Not the router/access point. I would suggest your neighboor getting a brand name wireless card for his desktop, maybe even Linksys. :tounge:

What exactly are you trying to do with the linksys routers?

Sounds like you are trying to leech off of a neighboors network and use their internet with your linksys router. If this is what you are trying to do it will not work unless you do this; you need to get access to the router that you are leeching from, (well you just need access to the configurationpage), so if your neighboor hasn't change the admin password jump in there and do this.... (I'm not sure if it will work with the router model, since I have not used/seen the wireless-b router model config page.) But look for where you can set the router to be a 'Wireless Bridge' and there should also be an option on that same line for 'Remote Bridge MAC Address' You will need to enter -your- router's MAC access in that field. Save it and yer good to go on that end. Now on your router you will need to set the mode to 'Access Point Client' and in the field 'Remote AP MAC Address' You will need to enter your neighboor's router's MAC address so these two routers will talk. Once you do this you should be good to go. (-Now remember I am going off of a Linksys Wireless-B Access Point configuration page, I am not sure if these options are in the Linksys Wireless-B Router configuration page.-)
