making edits withOUT getting rid of the update.dat [Archive] - ForumsHQ

i don't know if this was already posted or if someone else already had the idea, but if not...

we recently edited all of our monsters to 2x exp, deleted the update file and we were on our way. *we had the usual shop regen and monster regen problems. *it got annoying so i opened up the update file in hexedit 2.2 and edited the monsters in the update file to 2x exp as well (since the update file is just all the dat files combined one after another). *put the update file back in and walla, *2x monsters --no regen problems.

theoretically (haven't tried this yet), i think you could actually just make your edits in the update file, and when mud finishes initializing it would overwrite the regular item/monster/etc file with the edits you just made.

Or you can just use LJN to compile a new update database that will include your edits in it.

...not with mud 1.11i (mod9) like we're using.

Ahh yeah that's a problem. Too bad there isn't anything that will compile that database file for 1.11i, it's a handy thing to be able to do.

I don't know... The update file LJN gave me was whacky. Had monsters regenning all over places they shouldn't. It was like it switched all the group and index numbers around. I didn't even wait around to see if anything else was screwed up, I just shut down the board and restored a backup from before LJN's update file. And I was using 1.11g. Trust me people, back up before you try anything with LJN.

You should backup before you make any major changes with a bbs...

You SHOULD, but most people don't. Especially after said change has worked in the past. I was just giving a little reminder that it's definitely warranted here.

Mine backs up the dat files to another location on the local drive and to a networked drive at every cleanup. And I take the bbs down every week or so to get a backup of the entire bbs. One of the worst things that can happen to a BBS is to have data loss and no backups, want to lose users fast that's how you do it. Something pretty aweful would have to happen for me to not be able to go back to within 24 hours of a problem... for instance my house burning down... at which point I doubt I would be too concerned with my BBS heh

Hey Syntax,

Do you have a hex map of the Updat2.dat file?

I'm new to hexxing in general, but hexxing the update file sounds like the way to go. But the thing is Huge, and most of it seems to be all 00 's anyway.

Thanks for the help,

Apollo
