Southern California's oldest and fastest BBS continues to flourish even 14 years later!

Here is a brief list of the upgrades we have performed over the last year to keep BrainToys BBS the fastest and most inviting board anywhere!

Thanks to a generous donation from a user, BrainToys moved onto a dual 2ghz CPU server setup. The performance increase was phenomenal, but I still felt cleanup took a little bit too long (about 3 minutes for cleanup and full MajorMUD init), so I purchased a wonderful Serial-ATA "Raptor" drive (10k rpm, 5.2ms, 8mb buffer.) This reduced cleanup times by 60%.

We installed a new Mikrotik Linux router. BrainToys has always been happy to offer multiple internet services to its users (such as email, DNS, and web hosting services), but even with a megabit of upload, bandwidth can become an issue if a large attatchment or file gets pushed. We have added a separate smarthost mail server and web server, and put bandwidth limitations on those boxes. Now, our members can continue to utilitize BrainToys internet services, without the possibility of lagging the boards. Our router has also been setup to give telnet port 23 complete priority before packets on differnt ports get to be uploaded.

We bought a nice new, expensive Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) to prevent crashes from brief power outtages. (Our old one went bad finally after 3 years. Piece of shoe). The SDSL modem, Router, Networking Hardware, and BBSs, sub-BBSs (DMA), and all other servers, are connected uninterruptable power supply. We hate downtime as much as you.

Ontop of the UPS, we acquired another nice piece of hardware. All of our equiptment is connected to a power strip that has an IP address. Now I can remotely power-cycle any piece of hardware on the LAN.

Did I mention DMA server? We have 2, with a 3rd on the way!! Our DMA servers run countless old skool BBS modules (including all those hard to find dos/door modules). TeleArena, Swords of Chaos, Farwest Trivia, Mutants, Crosswords, 3 T-Lords, a 2nd game of MajorMUD (thats right, we run multiple Muds!!) and so much more are available thanks to the sub-bbs (DMA) technology. DMA servers make it easy for us to add all kinds of fun and rare modules to our board!

For all of you non mud players, you can play trivia to win free time on the bbs!

Our webpage www.BrainToys.org, isn't just a usless bbs page for posting member pictures. We keep the page very up to date. The site acts as the central point of information for contests and tournaments. BBS modules such as teleconference, e-mail (including i-net email), and forums are available through our unique ActiveX interface linked with the board. Our MajorMUD section is full of captures. (We give away free access for submissions!)

Speaking of MajorMUD...

BrainToys runs now 3 great realms!

MajorMUD I opened over 2 years ago. This realm runs on our incredibly fast worldgroup server. We average 45+ users in this realm alone (and those aren't dupes - all individual people!!) The realm is super active, regardless of being such an old game. Players of all levels span the realm; gangs continue to grow. This is the kind of realm that keeps items in circulation on its own (while we do monitor it for idle items, regardless). The atmosphere is unbelievably inviting.

Our second game of MajorMUD is only a few months old. Our MajorMUD II still has countless limiteds available. Mod9 hasn't been touched. A small gang of users recently left, so 6+ *Stacked* users have had their items flushed. This realm is also a bit more hostile. PvP is not taboo here. Gangs are constantly looking for more members to help in their quests against their enemies.

Both games are configured virtually the same. Sys map is included. Death is -15. PVP range is 10. Hangup pen is 20%HP 0% item drop. Neither game has any characters with mudop keys. Neither game allows dupes.

The third MajorMUD is a classic, brought to you old school mudders who remember the times. Version 1.1a , Mod 1 & 2 coming 6/4/04 with total reset. So make sure you get in there to get started with the rest!

There is plenty of help available if you want it, if not, you can go on your own.

I tried signing up as stated the other day. I filled everything out except my home address which is nobodys business but mine. Just to drop in and see how your realm was prospering. I was suspended for not giving out my home address. Even the cell number was correct for phone number. :noway:

Sorry invisigod :) Control caught no numbers in the address where you provided a url. Normally I catch these things quickly but this one slipped through the cracks.

Thanks for showing interest and (trying) to stop by.
