Fixed the room problem. Now, something new [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Ok, I finally figured out that 376 is the jail, so I added that room, and now it no longer complains about that. Now, it just dies when I try to bring the server up.
It gets as far as saying "MajorMUD buffers allocated and CNF options verified" and then dies. It pops up a window that says:
C:\wgserv\wgserver.exe - Access Violation. Attempt to read from: 4
And then it says it'll restart in 30 seconds. Mud does a recovery every time I try to start this thing, and I just don't know as much about WG as I do about MM (which isn't necessarilly saying much), so I have no idea what to do. Mud will come up if I leave in the full hacked files, but that destroys the point of starting with a blank palette.
Help? Please?
Edit: Forgot to add that I created an update file with LJN and tried a recovery, which went without problems, but I still get this stupid Access Violation error and it dumps the board.

Hey, that's what caused my board to be down for almost 24 hours the other day. That exact same message. What I did to fix it was to reinstall my items file, and that cleared it up. Now I don't know if it is your item file, but sounds like it is one of your .dat's.... if you have backups, or whatever, just reinstall one, see if it works, if not, try a different one, and keep going til you find the right one. I would suggest starting with the items dat first tho, only because that's what the problem was for me, and may have something to do with the "4" violation.

Hm...may try that, but what I'm doing right now is combing over each fucking room to make sure it's not calling something that doesn't exist in the DB somewhere, because I realized I had left some stuff in from when the rooms were in my mud from before. I've removed a ton of stuff, had mud wipe the rooms clean of items, and I'm still getting the error. I can only assume there's still something in there hosing it.
If I can't get it to go, I'll try swapping those DBs in and out until it works. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I know what the problem is now: it's the text blocks. And while LJN imports a file nicely, it doesn't delete the ones that were removed in the text file. Sigh. Off to Nightmare to delete about 10000 blocks of text.

That didn't fix it. Swapping files around (old items/new items) doesn't do it. I've gone through all of my rooms, made sure they're not referencing any items, monsters, spells, etc that don't exist. I've removed every item from every room, and every monster. I have text blocks in for the titles for my classes. I've covered every damn thing I can think of, but I'm still getting that same error (Access Violation. Attempt to read from: 4.).
I'm getting close to just deleting all of this stuff it's annoying me so much. Help! Anyone!

This may seem stupid to ask, but I'll ask anyway...
Do you have a room 4?
When I started reading this post, the first thing I thought was perhaps you didn't have rooms numbered up to the ones you inserted for jail/reincarnate rooms...But I read the rest, and am not sure as to what it might be...just wanted to check on this aspect, just incase

No, indeed I do not. I can try popping in a room 4 and see, but I'm really thinking it's looking for something else, but because the error is so vague, I can't tell what it wants.
It's making it very difficult to start with a clean slate. I wonder if anyone else has run into this problem when trying to start with a fresh game....
Just tried that, and no dice. The error no longer comes up in the audit trail. The audit trail doesn't complain actually, it's the stupid little box that pops up when you have an ugly error, and it insists it can't read from 4, whatever the hell that is.
If I get pissed off enough, I may scrap everything _again_ and just add a simple class, race, and the four required rooms (that I know of at least) and see what it does. I really don't want to be stuck using the existing databases and not know what I can and can't delete out of them to make space for what I want. That was a large part of why I stopped editing this stupid thing months ago.
If I get to the point of completely whacking everything, I'll post some sort of status update. Until then, I'm still stumped in trying to figure out what's wrong with this current setup.
