I read somewhere I can use IE to remote desktop...is that true?

well just found this. IIS? What is that? I dont have to setup a web server do I?

The Remote Desktop Web Connection ActiveX control allows you to access your computer, via the Internet, from another computer using Internet Explorer. You must be running Windows XP Professional and using its Internet Information Services (IIS) to ***host a Web site on the Internet to use this feature.***

I guess this isn't to difficult :)



To install Remote Desktop Web Connection



In the Add/Remove Programs item in Control Panel, under Add/Remove Windows Components, install Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

Install the World Wide Web Service subcomponent of IIS.

Install the Remote Desktop Web Connection subcomponent of World Wide Web Service.

These steps install the Remote Desktop ActiveX control and sample Web page to the %systemroot%\web\tsweb directory. These steps share the Web page in the \tsweb directory on your server; for example, at http://myserver/tsweb. The control (msrdp.ocx) and the Remote Desktop Web Connection code are located in msrdp.cab.



My server will be...my IP. Who wants to help me setup some DSN servers so I can host webremotetomypc.com ;)

you could probably get it working, but you shouldn't be tinkering around with IIS if you know dick about it and your computer is exposed to the internet. iis is full of security holes and you dont want to leave yourself subject to hacks. if you proceed anyway, at least make sure you have all of your security updates and service packs. i don't feel like looking into how how this whole thing works, i just wanted to offer some advice.

p.s. just get pc anywhere, timbuktu, or any other remote desktop software. you should be able to configure them to listen on port 80 if that is what you need. i know you can with pc anywhere anyway.

If you have windows 2003, it does that for you...



Otherwise use Remote Desktop connection or some generic VNC client.

Well...see the thing is, working as the hospital...they blocked all the ports but a few...80 is one thats open so I can surf the web.



This remote desktop is web based with ActiveX so it should work ;)

Other then that...I cant instll PC Anywhere on the computer, and the built in remote desktop is blocked. I have tried to change the port the it uses, but it uses a random port internally...??dunno...either way, I will see if this works when I get home. It says I cant log on to a computer, from that same computer..so so far so good :)

Problem is...sometimes I move from computer to computer...mainly at 1, but sometimes I have to move...They dont want me to install PC anywhere on any of these computers...unless you dont need to install it on client your using to connect with...??



They dont *want* me doing it anyway...they are really uptight about that kinda stuff and getting a virus...its a hospital!

I almost got it working..I tried to get on to it from here and got this message..

Well, I am sure its enabled and I know its not to busy..it uses port 80, its web based using ActiveX. The proxy would give me a webpage telling me it denied it..I am not getting that. So I dont think its on the hospital end. I'll take another look at it again tomorrow.

I have the same issue, all internet access/dns resolution are through company proxy server, none of them seem to allow me connect remotely, remote desktop web connection, remote desktop client, I can't even ping out, the only way i can get to an external ip address or domain name is through proxy in browser, even when i connect to my home computers through web browser, when trying to launch remote desktop from web page hosted on my pc, it gets the same error saying server busy or RD not enabled, I know it works when I try to connect from else where, havent tried vnc or pc anywhere, but i doubt they will work if ip/dns can't be resolved, anyone knows how to circumvent this? greatly appreciated.
