This is fascinating:



1. Nano-technology has led to the development of a carbon nanotube material that exhibits strengths 100 times stronger than steel.

There is a company in the Penn. area that has been working on something they call BioSteel. Its basically a product of genetic engineering of goats and spiders. They create goats that secrete a protein in their milk which, when refined, can be processed into spider silk.

With their techniques, they can mass-produce this silk (which is otherwise almost impossible to get from natural spiders). The biosteel could then be used for construction or other applications.



They already have several families of goats which they are breeding into a harvestable size.



Comparitavely, spider silk is 200 times stronger than steel, and can stretch and bend 250 times steel before it breaks.



I wrote a whole paper on it (posted on my site), but theres so much more info about it, I'd post a link to their site, but I'm too lazy right now to go look for it.

Wow dude, that elevator thing would be sweet if they got it built..but..what would happen if some terrorist guy fucked it up? I mean..that would definetely be a prime candidate for terrorism...and that would fuggin suck.

that tougher than steel shit is crazy..a space elevator would be kewl but would be mad expensive ;)



It SAYS 17 grand a flight and 222/person..that's if they were working for free..lol. You'd have to add in salary charges, maintenance, and profit..so like 3 grand a ticket or so? More? Ow.. ;)

I've seen this before, and at first I honestly thought it was a joke. It's so counter-intuitive, when you think about it. All you are doing is putting the large majority of the weight in space, where the centrifical force of orbit (as well as other forces) will actually hold the elevator part in our atmosphere "up."
