"Phreakers" are modern day troublemakers who specialize in attacks on the telephone system. The word, which became popular in the mid-1980s, is probably a combination of the words "phone" and "freak." ("Phreakers" are also known as "phreaks" or "phone phreaks.") A "phreaker" can use either low-tech means, such as whistling or using an instrument to mimic the tones the phone system utilizes to route calls and identify payment, or the more high-tech tactic of breaking into and manipulating the phone company's computer system. I learned it just to make free calls, but most of the phreaks I know aren't malicious, they just like to have fun, and how better to prank call someone but from someone elses phone :)

Oh yeah, how about those good ole Motorola flip phones you could hack with aluminum foil and throw into scanning mode and listening in on sex calls and drug deals? Northeast Philly was fun when you could listen in on other people's stuff :)
