In the last couple days, my IE has started to lag REALLY bad.. Like almost freezing up at times and eatting up 100% of the cpu's resources (sometimes when just moving my mouse over the IE window in the background, cpu usage jumps to 100%). Sometimes it gets so bad that all of my mega's freeze up, and as I type this, 3/5 of my megamuds are dropped.



I have tried the following to no avail:

-scanned for viruses, found none.

-scanned for spyware several times, and every time deleted whatever crap it found

-reinstalled IE 6 SP1

-cleared temp files directory

-checked for errors and defrag'd my hard drive



I am now out of ideas. If anyone has experienced this and knows how to fix it, some help would be appreciated.



I don't want to format the drive, and so my backup plan is using either Opera or Mozilla, or one of those other independent browsers. Failing the IE fix, what browser would you recommend? Thanks.

i use opera religiously. the only time i ever even open IE, is if a site will just NOT let me use opera at all. the interface is so much easier than IE. rather than have 3 windows if IE open at once, opera will tab each new window within the same instance. its fully customizable. you can set up email thru it. it has a built in pop up stopper that is excellent!!!!!!!!!! i have mine set to only allow pop-ups that are requested by me. and i never see any others. i havent tried many other browsers. i tried netscape a few years back and it was ok. but not as good as IE at the time. then i tried this and was completely blown away. i will never go back.

did you try uninstalling and reinstalling IE? that's usually the first step. note, IE6 SP1 +hotfix rollup is the latest IE version.



off topic, but i wanted to comment on the pop up blocker that demonic mentioned. google has a new toolbar (still in beta but you can d/l it) that has a pop up blocker in it. it stops all popups unless you hold control when clicking the link or by allowing popups for specific sites all together.

I heard uninstalling IE really fucks with windows because IE is like at the core of everything...

i use mozilla... it's pretty good

You cant really uninstall IE, its an integral part of windows explorer. I did that once on an old windows NT box and it basically blew it up.

i uninstall IE from machines all the time at work. it doesn't really uninstall, it just regresses back to the previous version. but then you can reinstall a newer version.

If you are running 2k and have upgraded to service pack 2 or 3 you will have to uninstall the service packs before you can uninstall i.e. Dumbass microsoft mother fuckers...
