Ok, I just put together a comp with the following stats:



AMD XP 2000+ with retail fan

Biostar M7VIP DDR 400 motherboard

512 MB Corsair PC 2100 DDR RAM

GeForce FX 5200 128MB Video Card

40 GB 7200 RPM Generic HDD

32x CDrom

standard FDD

etc... i think that's all that needs to be mentioned. it cost me about $350



Anyway: to the point. for some reason it just resets itself during some applications and games. Since I just got the pieces and put it together yesterday, I've only seen 3 places where it will completely reset itself. The first is when I try to install Java, it will get to the end and reset itself. The second is when I try to run Serious Sam, and the 3rd is when I try to run Counter-strike. Those are the only two games I have installed, but something tells me there is a pattern forming.



Anyway, it seems from the reset that it would be caused by the graphics card or something. It says that it's DrectX 9.0 compliant, so I installed it, could be that too.



When it restarts, it gives me the Send Error Report thingie that M$ XP gives. Of course it gives values and such, but it's cryptic to me, I have no clue what BCP1 or BCCode, etc. are.



Anyway, anyone have any suggestions to give me?

ok, it's GOT to be the damn gfx card. I just tried to play a 1 minute video clip and it crashed.... sigh, I knew it must have been too good of a deal to be true :P

did you try the latest detonator drivers from nvidia.com?

did you apply windows xp sp1a?

did you apply all the other windows updates?

it has all windows xp professional updates, however the graphics driver for geforce fx 5200 is not supported by windows xp, so I used the installation CD to install the graphics drivers, and i'm installing the latest detonater drivers as we speak. i tried the directx diagnostic tool and it looks like pre-detonater the direct3d doesn't work... at all

k detonater drivers installed, and it let me play the video, let me install java, but still wouldn't let me play the games... somethin's messed up w/it

ok with the latest drivers, nothing resets, but all of the games crash out or go really slow. and direct3d still doesn't work

maybe return that video card for a better quality one like a Geforce Ti series or an ATI Radeon ... those ATI's are sweet and i know you play a lot of 3D games so it would be worth your while to get a good vid card (IMO).

Look for a fixed version of Directx 9

The one microshit came out cause a bunch of problems so some ppl made a fixed patch



Better yet, stick with 8 untill its fixed

i ordered it online and you have to pay for restocking. this should be a damn good graphics card damnit



it's somewhat comparable with the 4200 at half the price. the card was $60 man. and it was directx 9 compliant, that means it'd be good for all the new games to come out.



anyway, i'll try installing dx 8 tonight, we'll see if that helps *sigh*

i was looking at this cheap card as basically a slightly better version of the MX 420, which is what i have in another comp, and runs perfectly. but as neoseeker.com puts it, "benchmarking the GeforceFX 5200 128MB was like watching America compete in World Cup Soccer. You know it's going to lose, but it's still disappointing when it happens."
