Alright, I have this machine that I put together with parts from a compaq and a gateway. No problem cept for the DVD drive doesn't work. Had XP for awhile, didn't work there, have ME now, still doesn't work. It's a Compaq sd-612b DVD-Rom drive. I downloaded some drivers / programs off the net that were sposed to fix it - flash updates and the like - but still doesn't work. I can't find any drivers for it, and everywhere I look it seems I see people with the same damn problem. Should I just go buy a DVD drive or does someone know where I can find info or drivers to get rid of this problem? Thanks.

Well, for one thing, how does it 'not work'? Does it detect in BIOS, or not? Does it just not play dvds? Or no sound? 'Not work' isn't descriptive enough to really tell you what to do...

However, check the IDE cable, and maybe try switching to a different IDE chain, could just be a bad cable/ide controller.

It reads data cd's just fine, but doesn't read dvd's. I put the dvd in and try to access the drive, it doesn't recognize there's even a disk in the drive. I've tried switching the cables, doesn't work. As I said tried the flash update, didn't work. I've seen so much about them not working, but nothing that works about how to fix them.

1) do you have a dvd-viewing program. I know it sounds stupid that I ask but we should cover the basics.

2) DO check for any recalls and alike. I had a dvd-combo drive from Dell and it broke so I called to get a replacement and I hammered the guy with questions about it and he finally told me they had lots of problems with the particular drive. It will quit reading dvds and then just stop reading everything and you can get drivers till your blue in the face for it but nothing will work it was how the drive was actually designed (very poorly)
