I'm seriously thinking about switching from IkonBoard to VB (www.vbulletin.com)

Who will be willing to help with the license ($160) and how much will you contribute?

No posts will be lost A database converter is available from my understanding.

for my 5 bux, can i cange the name to MorbidMessage Board??

a few more questions

1:. How easy is it to switch to VB...

2:. of course all the old posts are going to be there...

3:. my account with my sig. and advatar will be there...

4:. Does it have a chat room???

if ya think it's necessary, i'll pitch in $5. i think there's nothin wrong with this board tho, and vbulletin takes up a LOT more bandwidth.

I havent used VB much,it looks great, but you have an awsome setup already Aragon, so why would you switch?

A few reasons I want to do it:

1.) vB, being php & mySQLpowered puts less strain than perl-based iKonboard on the server (not that I'm having issues with the server...)

2.) vB is MUCH easier to setup

3.) vB setup is much quicker

4.) Moving iB from server to server is A PAIN. I would know. I've done it about 4 times...

5.) I know ikonboard has mysql DB option, but I can't convert this db to MySQL (I don't know why, there were errors last time I tried).

6.) The entire vB database will be in mysql in ENGLISH instead of some binary crap that the ikonboard DBM is in...

7.) vB has about 100 files if I remember... iKonboard has like 100 directories...

8.) Backing up vB db is a simple matter of dumping the MySQL db: takes about 2 seconds. Backing up iB via the control panel takes a few minutes. Backing up iB via prompt takes about 20 seconds, BUT it's not the best way since permissions & ownerships will be f*cked up if you have to restore. This means you have to either manually correct the ownership, or give more lenient permissions.

9.) You get what you pay for. iB is free. vB costs $160.

Many of these points are issues that I face, being the one that actually takes care of MMB To you, the load time is about the same; the look is a little different... but overall, vB or ikonboard, you won't be affected greatly.

So there's my reasoning. Now who else wants to contribute?

p.s. Where did you get the bandwidth info? I don't see how that can be accurate.

That message is enabled by the administrator. It is a feature within both iB and vB. They use it to reduce load on the server. I think they had vB before.. ? If not it was UBB (which is a big piece of crap...) That in no way means it uses more bandwidth. Bandwith means data sent over the network; in or out. For a forum, the majority of the bandwidth comes when users keep refreshing pages and that loads the text & images over and over. I'm not sure how image caching works, but forums set the cache timeout to delete the data immediately since forums are more or less "real time" and it doesn't want your isp to keep serving you old information. Basically, it doesn't matter what forum you are using, bandwidth consumption is more on the users end and not software controlled. Now there are ways you can reduce this with software using schemes to compress data before it is sent and if i'm not mistaken, both iB and vBulletin either does this by default or makes the option available.

On a side note, my isp at one of my jobs IGNORES this frequently and I have problems with refreshing for updated data (actually, it's gotten better with forums lately...)
