Just curious.. When starting on a new mud, do you prefer that everyone starts at the same point as you.. or do you think racial starting points would improve the early game with a nice twist.
Both have its pros and cons.
If everyone starts at the same point, it encourages team work early on, as well as early grouping. On the flip side, it creates overcrowding for exp areas that doesn't really get solved until 20-30+ on the busier muds.
If everyone starts in their racial starting points (ie prolly their racial towns), it gives everyone a sense of identity (for the rare roleplayer in the midst), as well as an ability to get some race-only items early on. It also helps elevate the overcrowding problem. On the other hand though, it separates the players, possibly for several levels, which isn't always fun for several reasons..
Or option C -- have the option to do either.

I would love to see a mud with racial starting points. Is this possible? I think it is, just dunno how. The best thing would be to take out all portals/sys gotos, and have them all start very far away from eachother. Not like one right next to the other. It'd be cool if it took like 10-15 minutes to walk from one to the other, with dangerous things on the way so little guys couldn't do it as easily as bigger ones.

It's possible..
And yeah, of course, no goto's for users. That'd defeat the purpose.

You could also put bonuses in the specific areas for the races. Different bonuses per race, like equipment (not race restricted) only found in that races homeland. Make it so no other races can get into that area too. It'l make it harder to get the equipment, since they'd have to get it from someone of that race.

Great idea -- encourages pvp!

nod, or just having someone of that race run to the shop and get something, or create another char... but it's still cool.

It'd have to be a no-dupe board for it to work perfectly as designed. Though a simple level check (say 5-10) on a shop room would somewhat slow the dupes down.
This could also be the first step to stimulating player economy if dropped money is adjusted vs store prices vs rarity.

possibly revamp newhaven's starting room to have race only exits. Have it do a race check and only allow the specified race to pass. Great idea Rust.

I was thinking of something else, but your idea is much better. That way you can allow certain races a choice. Like half-elves could start in either human or elven towns, etc..

In all honesty, racial starting points make a lot of sense.. That's something i wouldnt mind seeing Metro do in the next release. That is, if they didnt botch that like everything else they touched.
