anybody know any sites or any walkthroughs of learning a linux based OS? I.E. i'm runnin Mandrake 9 right now, just installed a couple days ago. was wonderin if anyone has had experience with it, knows how to do some cool stuff with it, etc. etc. etc . :)

I've only used RedHat.



I know you can have this penguin sit on your desktop and he dances to mp3s that you got playing...



That's about it. I use my linux boxes as servers or do offline php/mysql programming ;)

Try switching from Redhat to Suse.

The security is MUCH stronger than redhat, in fact suse has the strongest security while redhat is the simplest to use etc

I have an F in my Unix class. Lol.

If you're going to run any *nix, you should run Freebsd.

It's much better than linux. It's faster, crunches better and is THE fastest operating system on the internet. Just my opinion. I used to uselinux and worked on linux webservers in the past I got introduced to FreeBSD and i'm never goin' back. Check it out. IT's worth at ry. There is even an FTP mirrior to install of the net so no need to download or order the cd. And best of all. It's FREE

your also forgetting that freebsd and openbsd are MUCH harder to install and run compared to the others but i have to agree, i love them more than suse

i disagree. I found that i could install any BSD variant without ANY of the problems i was having with linux. I suppose it's just the flavour of choice. Thanks.

Naw man, your missing my point.

What Im saying is for someone like yourself and I, it shouldnt be a problem. Shit Ive gotten ALOT more hardware configured with less agravation than on redhat or suse but for someone who doesnt know linux very well, free and open might be alittle difficult for them
