As a general rule, people who'd say it in a public place like that are just looking for attention. Whether it's on a conscious level or not is debatable, IMO sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. I used to be very badly depressed, it was disabling to the point where I couldn't even find the will or energy to mud, let alone lead a normal life. The mere thought of sustaining a steady job or relationship invoked sarcastic laughter. Let me tell you, when you get to that point, and you lay there just daydreaming about death like a 13 year old dreams about women, the LAST damned thing you're gonna do it jeopordize your chance by telling everyone about it. Landing yourself in the nuthouse is a bad thing, and believe me it does happen from telling the wrong person you're suicidal. It's also bad when family finds out and takes away all the good methods such as dangerous prescription drugs and guns, leaving you with methods that are more likely to leave you in a hospital bed in incredible pain than kill you. Why slit wrists is a popular method is beyond me... It's painful as hell, difficult to get the second wrist, and doesn't always work due to numerous reasons. Now, the carotid arteries or jugular vein... they'll get the job done... Err... I'm straying from the point...

I've seen a lot of people on the internet threaten suicide. I've yet to see one do it. I've also seen a lot of people that never threatened do it without warning. Granted, there's exceptions to every rule and I'm sure there's a fair number of people that did it for attention or as a last attempt cry for help and get disappointed to the point of doing it, but as a general rule, only worry if they're a close friend confiding in you.

Since I'm a longwinded bastard, a few other points...

First, just because they probably aren't gonna log off and go take a bottle of sleeping pills doesn't mean they aren't very sick people. Just because they haven't been pushed over the edge doesn't mean they aren't in need of serious medical attention and some serious drugs. I always see some people ripping into suicide threatening people because they're not really that bad off. Doesn't mean they're okay, damnit!

I believe strongly in a person's right to end themselves if they so choose. It's their life to do with as they wish. Sure, they leave behind grieving relatives and that's considered by some to be "selfish." Bullshit. It's selfish to want to end your own suffering but it's not selfish to expect someone to keep suffering for decades just so you don't have to deal with losing them? It may be slightly cowardly to do it before trying medication if one knows they're out there, but it is no way "selfish."

Speaking of depression medication, I must warn since the God forsaken thing is prescribed so much... Paxil = Last resort. Unlike other antidepressants, getting off of it can be absolute hell. I've read that the withdrawl symptoms can only be compared to heroine withdrawl they're so severe. I know they were for me. And you often can't ween off of it because even if you go down 1 mg a week, the withdrawl will start up at a specific point. It's not addictive in the sense that you feel the need to keep taking it, but the withdrawl feels like you're dying of the ebola. On the other hand, it's powerful stuff and it's all that works for some people.
