i have a cable modem and like 4 computers who want to use it. i don't want to pay for extra ips, i know there is a way to split 'em on 1 ip. it's not a hub, it's either a switch or router that would do it, but is there another, cheaper way?
any help would be appreciated, thx
Ray

you can use a hub if you have nt/2k/xp and 2 nics on a machine
just network all the computers with the hub and enable internet connection sharing with the computer with 2 network cards...other than that i dont know what else u can do. oh and the computer with 2 nics must be on for the others to use the internet. hope that helps

I've got a linksys cable/dsl router connecting 2 of ours to the same cable line. I'm using #'s 3 and 4 with 2 and 1 being free. I'm guessing you could get one of those. I'm not sure tho. This one only ran about $30.

Just go spend a few bones on a router/switch. Routers with 4 or 5 port switches built in aren't very expensive.

You could do what I do. I run Sinister Urge on a computer that is connected to the main computer via 2 network cards and a cable. Cheapo!

Pick up a linksys router, its cheap and has a nice firmware firewall with it.. it can be pain if you want to setup a unreal server etc but i nerer had a problem running a board off it.
