Dont know if this is in the right section but ill give it a shot.



THE FIVE MONKS.



An urgent call came to the Abbot of the north from the Abbot of the south asking for a wise and holy monk to initiate the novices in the spiritual life.



To everyones astonishment , the Abbot of the North sent five monks instead of one.



To those who inquired why he sent five monks instead of the one requested, he said cryptically: "We will be lucky if one of them gets to the monastary of the south."



The group of monks began their journey and had been on the road some days when a messenger came running up to the and said, "The priest of our village has died. We need someone to take his place."



The village seemed a comfortable place and the priest's salary was handsome one.



One of the monks was seized with pastoral concern for the people. "I should not be a good monk," he said "if i did not stay on to serve these people" So he dropped out and stayed.



Some days later they happened to stay at the palace of a king who took a fancy to one of the monks. "Stay with us," said the king "and you shall marry my daughter. And when i die, you will succeed me to the throne."



The monk was attracted to the lusture of kingship, so he said "What better way to influence the people than to become a king? I should not be a good monk if i did not seize this oppertunity to serve the interests of religion." So he droped out too and stayed.



The rest of the group went on their way and one night, in a hilly region, came upon an isolated hut that was inhabited by a pretty girl. She offered them hospatality and thanked god for sending the monks to her.



Her parents had been murdered by mountain bandits and the girl was all alone and afraid.



The next morning, when it was time to leave, one of the monks said, "I shall stay with this girl. I should not be a good monk if i did not practice compassion."



So the remaining two monks set off on their way and came to a village and found, to their horror, that all the villagers had abandoned their religion.



One of the monks said, "I owe it to these people and to the Lord, to stay on her and win them back to faith."



Eventually the fifth and last monk made it to the Monastary of the South.

Not a bad story at all.

Ok not trying to be a smart ass but what is the moral of the story? 1 in 5 monks likes kids, 2 in 5 will do what gives them the most profit, 1 in 5 wants to tell everyone what to do, and 1 in 5 that actually does what he is told to do.

Thats just it,your not supposed to psychoanalyze the story, just take it for face value. ;)

I personally don't see any face value, I could have written a story about twelve monkeys that had the same journey and each stopped off at a different place and started beating off, it would have the same effect to me. Maybe its cause I'm drunk, I'll read it again tomorrow.

Read the Ancient Mariner..don't know who it's by, and it's not a short story, but interesting..I personally liked it, although I'd have to read it again to tell you the moral..hehe.
