Wondering "What is DoorMUD?!?" [Archive] - ForumsHQ

It occurred to me that some MMB users have no idea what the heck DoorMUD is, so I figured I'd post a lil explanation...

DoorMUD is an alternative MUD game for BBS's, coded and designed entirely by myself, from scratch. It was first released in May of 2000 and has been expanded a lot since then. The interface has similarities to MajorMud, but there's some differences:

- It's designed for playing by hand. You level FAST so scripts aren't needed at all. In fact, sysops can set limits that pretty much make scripts not even worth having.

- It's cheap. 4-user version is $20, 16-user version is $60. And since there's not a bunch of scripts taking up a million lines, a lot of boards are fine w/ just the 4-user version.

- It's now sysop editable. If you pay for the game (4-user OR 16-user), you now get the World Editor program. It's exactly the same program I used to make the game's existing game world, so you pretty much have free reign. The editor can even be run remotely (ie, over the BBS), and sysops can give specific users Implementor access so they can edit/add stuff too.

- Creative classes and races... play a Troll Gladiator, a Demon Shaman, or lots of other interesting combinations

- Faster combat rounds... 4 seconds, versus MajorMud's 5-second rounds.

- Better command interface: Commands like "get all" / "wear all". Optional movement w/ numeric keypad. Auto-combat with just "a" to attack first monster in room. Built in =r repeat command. Better NPC interaction for quests.

- "Recall" command for quickly returning to town (like in many internet MUDs). Don't worry, it can't be abused, since you can't use it in combat.

- Sooooo much more. Hit up the DoorMUD website at http://dmud.thebbs.org for more info, area maps, item lists, etc.

So where's the catch? Well, it doesn't run on WorldGroup, but it runs on just about every other BBS software. I recommend using Synchronet -- it's a free, open-source Windows BBS package with built-in servers for telnet (up to 250 lines), rlogin, newsgroups, internet mail, ftp, etc. It's very customizeable... in the newer versions, you can even use JavaScript to write BBS modules. Hell yeah.

The good news -- there IS a way to run DoorMUD under Worldgroup -- just use Synchronet as a sub-bbs via rlogin. This will also let you use the oldschool door versions of LORD, Tradewars, etc (all of which are a LOT cheaper than the Worldgroup versions).

Again, Synchronet is free and pretty easy to set up... I have some instructions up at http://dmud.thebbs.org/wg/index.html if you're curious on how to use it as a sub-bbs / doorgame server under Worldgroup.

OK, so that's my sales pitch :D Huge props to Aragon for putting up the DoorMUD sponsor links + makin' this forum!

i thought majormud had 4 second rounds...

d00d, i think if you could get it to run on worldgroup, you would get a lot more attention. so you should focus your attention on that. how hard could it be?

Nope, MajorMud's combat rounds are definitely 5 seconds. I've heard a lot of people claim 4, but you can time it and see it's definitely 5... open up your system clock while playing MMUD sometime and see :D

As for the running DoorMUD on WorldGroup thing... "how hard could it be?" you ask... try $1000 for a WorldGroup dev kit, $500 for a registered copy of WG, a good bit of time to learn the WorldGroup dev functions, and an insane amount of time recoding DoorMUD from scratch so that it uses WG dev functions. Basically, not a possibility, sorry.

If/when I write another MUD from scratch, it will have built-in stand-alone servers for telnet and rlogin. Developing for WG just doesn't seem worthwhile, especially since Metro is eventually making a stand-alone MajorMud.

I think the doorserver solution works fairly well, all things considered. The main problem right now is that you can't run WorldGroup on the same computer as Synchronet, TradeWars Game Server, or any other rlogin-based program. This is a bug in WorldGroup that the authors won't fix :(

Worldgroup has major flaws in it's rlogin. For instance I you can't rlogin into a worldgroup system and have the user/pass sent along so you don't have to login (the whole point of using rlogin instead of telnet)... you still get dumped at a login prompt. Pretty shitty.

according to the code and manual, you have to pass those to it in the command line.
