QuoteHi guys,
I was contacted yesterday by a couple of people trying to track me down. Apparently MajorMud is alive again!
I was (up until yesterday), unaware anyone had gone to the effort to rewrite it. I think this had to happen for it to remain alive.
Ok, a few points I'd like to make at the outset:
- I haven't looked at MegaMud for some time (as you probably know all too well). I originally lost interest in developing MegaMud further because MajorMud wasn't really going anywhere and also because it was consuming too much of my family's time.
- MegaMud was then and still is just a hobby. I do have another 'real' job which pays the bills - MegaMud never did
- I haven't played MajorMud in nearly 8-9 years, and probably won't be, other than for testing.
- I am interested in doing a complete re-write of MegaMud (to be perfectly honest, I got curious last night and dug out the old source code and have already started ). I plan on writing it almost entirely in C# and WPF (.Net 3.5). And yes, will probably use SQL express or something similiar. Don't bother asking how long it will take ... I have no idea
- Assuming I can get it to a testable state, I'd love to have you guys involved in testing it.
- I don't particularly want to be overwhelmed with emails, so if anyone has any suggestions, please post them in the forums.
I'll try and visit these forums (or if someone wants to setup a MegaMud specific one) on a regular basis. I ended up getting GamePort to sell MegaMud for me since I didn't have the time to personally handle CC payments (or worse, foreign cheaues).
- I'm guessing most of you guys live in the U.S. - I live in Oz, so my time frame for answering any replies is going to be a little out of sync with the rest of you.
- Recently seperated (20 years marriage) and kids mostly grown up, I find I have plenty of spare time (at least in the evenings), so hopefully I can devote a fair amount of time to this pet project.
- It would be my intent (at least initially) to try and get the new MegaMud (I think I read here someone mentioned 'GigaMud' - haha, I like that one) to behave in a similiar fashion as the original, at least to the point where any existing customisations can be imported into the new version. After that stage, I'd like to address some of the bugs/strangeness where is gets lost/confused and try and add a lot more 'human-like' intelligence (which is what made it interesting for me in the first place).
- At SOME POINT, I will probably put the source for the new MegaMud into public domain - not sure when yet.
- Are the plans for GreaterMud to keep it as faithful to the original as possible? The reason I ask is there were always a few things in MajorMud that made life difficult for MegaMud and was wondering how flexible the new devs of GreaterMud would be for making it work better with MegaMud (and vice versa). This is a discussion I'd like to have with the developers (not sure sure who they are).
Looking forward to a new era
