Not 100% related, although Vitoc did pipe up about the purchase of Megamud, at least on a royalty level.

read: talks of majormud being purchased.

From Vitoc on 2008-04-18

Last week Mike from Entconn put together a joint effort among many sysops asking for donations in order to purchase MajorMUD. Mike has posted conversations he's had with her via E-mail about them definitely considering offers right now. Supposedly they're waiting until all the BBS's are sold and transfered before making their "official" announcement, but they are definitely taking offers already.

Mike has since wavered on his so-called "co-op" deal so not sure where he stands now.

basically nothing has come of it since then, so I wonder if it was just a couple-week-late april fools joke.

On the other hand, I took another look at what Vitoc has been doing with Greatermud, and somehow he's still active on it... he just did a new release yesterday 2008-06-02:

I'm still a little soured at the fact that he wants to make it closed source and for-pay -- I mean wasn't the point of this whole exercise so we could put the power into the hands of the people, not the hands of another dictator?

But I understand he (and a few others) put a lot of work into it, so of course he'd want some money out of it.

Price will be key, you can't expect to sell text based software for the prices metro has been asking in the past. BBS are no longer business but recreational. You can not expect to get rich off this. I have paid for TWGS, DoorMUD, Swath, Megamud, ally reasonably priced titles at time of purchase. 10k for WG+MUD get the fuck out of town...

Like Luther said, you can't look at this from a money-making angle. Purchasing it would be something to do if you had a bunch of disposible income and a real love for the game. If Vitoc does go closed-source/for pay, he might as well not even bother.

As for why it died, my guess is a relatively impulse decision followed with a whole lot of "Hey, isn't this a great idea?" "Yeah, awesome, lets do it!" turned into the reality that this software isn't really worth anything to anyone and when it times to pony up and lay out some cash or do some work, all the "Let's do it!" people become crickets chirping.

It will be closed-source and I'm aiming for a $50 price point which includes both TGS (the telnet server) and GreaterMUD.

There's a huge difference between asking for some compensation for your hard work and being "in it for the profit." 99% of open source advocates are only in it for free software. I've put way too much of my time into this project to simply give it away for free. Considering sysops over the years have each paid thousands for WG and Major MUD with all it's modules, $50 is more than a fair deal for a telnet server and a highly optimized clone of a game we all once enjoyed.

If you want to contribute come help us test the engine, provide feedback, and submit new ideas for future versions. If you're not willing to contribute in the first place then you have no right to complain about it not being open source.

i'd rather contribute from a developer's standpoint, which seems to be out of the question, for many reasons.

When I submit bugs, I prefer to have a patch handy -- because I do it with open source issues. I submit problem and proposed solution. When you submit a bug for a closed-source app, you can only submit the problem, meaning there's a good chance it won't even get looked at.

At any rate, I don't disrespect you for doing closed source. Like I said, it's your choice. It is a shame for those looking to get access and contribute to the source, though.

I mean this as a total compliment; you are not the norm.

I'm willing to share the APIs provided by TGS and the source to Teleconference so others can create their own modules, but I can't in good conscience share the source to GMUD. It's my baby.

Vitoc is stealing the content of major mud and adding to his engine. He will give anyone that uses nmr a converter for free to convert their content. How is that any different from anything everyone here has done, why not pay syntax for nmr?

Greater Mud look exactly like Majormud, classes & races are identical, the realm is identical. I wonder how Metro would react to you selling your game, when it is a direct rip off of Majormud?
