I recently purchased a new intel server mobo and it has a spot for an 8-pin power connection. I currently only have a celeron d 2.66mhz in it, so is this connection actually needed?? If anyone has any advice on this id appreciate it.

I don't believe you'll need the actual 8-pin connector to the motherboard unless your planning on doing some over-volting to the processor and memory. I have an AMD64 2.0 GHZ with 1.5gigs PC3200 Mushkin and a Geforce6800XT video card and didn't require it. Celerons are low voltage processors if I remember correctly.
