Evans Blue Full Review [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Evans Blue got their name from a diazo dye which has been the principal method of determining blood volume in humans and animals for over eighty years. They are a group from Canada making a huge mark in Canadian and American markets alike. Their debut release album The Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume touts such song titles such as: A Cross and a Girl Named Blessed, Over, The Promise and the Threat, and The Tease. This album also includes a remake of Sara McLachlan's Possession, of course in a way only Kevin Matisyn, singer of Evans Blue, could do. The vocals of Matisyn give you a reason why you would want to improve the mids in your car stereo. His voice is filled with heavy vibrato and feeling. Not only does Matisyn's voice portray emotions from the entire scale of human life but he has the lyrics to back it up. One such example is in the song, Eclipsed:
"We love our tragedies, we're both broken in our own little ways.. we're broken, but we fit together just right. You know, I saw the black inside your eyes. I saw they were eclipsed by mine...and they looked just right"
These lyrics for Eclipsed are juxtaposed by the lyrics for Over to show another aspect of emotion:
"You better see how evil you can be. When you see my evil smile, it's the one you will remember when I am not so kind [...] tell me, over and over and over and over again, it never was the time for us, it never was the time to let me in"
Lyrics is not the only thing that this band can deliver, some of the guitar riffs by Vlad Tanaskovic, lead guitarist, instantly draw you in. Just like the intro to the songs The Tease and Quote, a true rock ballad, including a scaled electric guitar solo.. a throw back to the solos of decades past. The music is not the only thing that will pull you into The Tease, the last song on the album. The lyrics draw you in and leave you with a smile on your face with words like these:
"Hold your hands into the sky, pray for mercy.. instead of time. So be my massacre, be my masochist, be my tease.. because you captivate me when you stand in front of me."
The album itself has many variables in the ways of vocals, guitars, and drums. Each song, living and breathing on it's own. When you play the CD from start to finish, you never know what is to come next from Evans Blue. They interpret melody and volume differently in each song. You will find the full spectrum of musical tones, scales, and emotions that are unique only to rock music. This is a band that has it all and this is a band that many more great things could surely come from.
