Well I am a mother and I have to say you have to be careful on what you expose kids to. My general opinion on violence/language/sex for a child is highly dependent on the atmosphere/environment of the child. If your cousin is in a very loving, positive environment those such exposures shouldn't effect them as much as it would for someone who could use more attention at home. You have to look at yourself and see if you are a good role model, and by you showing concern shows me that you probably are. If I were you I would ask your aunt and uncle if it is ok first, then I would suggest maybe explaining to your cousin that music is a form of art and storytelling. That music should be taken as entertainment and that some negative things that are in the lyrics are for artistic purposes and it is in no way meant to be taken as a way to be. If you think your cousin is smart enough to know the difference between fact and fiction, you should have no problem explaining to them that just like murder in a movie is not real neither is it in music. But first, you have to ask your cousin's parents... it should be their decision. Hope this helps!

Islascotts,

Its nice to see that some mothers/parents are actually still trying to be parents. I commend you on you trying to be a pillar of right and wrong to a child so they grow up with some decent morals. Too many parents nowadays want schools or the media world to do all the work for them but theyll be the first to sue if thier child does something wrong and they get blamed.

I am glad that my parents tried thier best on myself and my brothers and we grew up to be pretty decent people. My mind is always usually floating around in the gutter but thats just for fun in a normal boring slow day. My grandparents taught me to be kind to animals and have a big heart for them and to this day I will save an animal before saving a stupid human from harm. Humans can fend for themselves but animals depend on us because they are stuck in a world that we created. Dont get me wrong im not one of those hippy PETA people but If im driving down the road and see a stray dog or cat ill pick it up or if I see someone beating an animal or mistreating it may god have mercy on their soul after im done with them.

All parents should go to some parenting class. It should be required by law and have to sign up for it at a hospital or community center. Many people should not have children because they lack the common sense to show a child how to act in a world that is harsh and unforgiving but at the same time have many open doors for opportunities for success. Please and Thank You still go a very long way but hardly anyone uses them anymore.

iNViSiGOD can attest to the kind of mother I am. I try my best, but even my best is not good enough sometimes. And, there are plenty of times where I choose my own happiness over hers. But, this comes from a very good statement that I take to heart and try to remember everyday "children join our lives, we don't join their's." We can't choose our parents, just like my daughter couldn't choose me. She has to live the kind of life I choose to live, and I have to live my life according to me and not her. I believe that if your child is loved, and they love themselves then no amount of video game playing and watching bad language and violence in movies will do anything to them. Kids are way more intelligent than people give them credit for, that is why I encourage people to explain things to their kids instead of saying "because" or "because I said so." In short, being open and honest with your kids is the best way to go.

I agree it's up to the parents but there is just so much negativity out there, particularly in mainstream music, that it's unavoidable children will be exposed to it. I also agree that it's not right to talk down to kids (or more or less treat them like idiots) but rather explain things to them in a logical manner. If children were explained to how negativity can effect them and their lives as if it's their own choice, then there is less incentive on their part to try and rebel. But then there is peer pressure etc.

As far as the OP's post. JammX.com look like a positive group. It looks as though they are promoting activity as well as a positive message through mainstream music (hip hop). Hopefully they become more popular (as the peer pressure could be positive) and perhaps even get more kids active.

I listen to "negative" music, and anyone who knows me knows that I am actually a pretty upbeat person.... pretty optimistic and trusting. The music you listen to IS NOT who you are, and doesn't nessacarily reflect who you are. I am a music major, I have been classically trained in vairous instruments. I listen to all genres, but the main bulk is "negative." I have my 3 year old sing with me, when I am practicing with my voice. I don't mind her listening to this, or singing the swear words. Music is an art form, singers are artists... and so their lyrics are art. I don'e agree with warning kids about the dangers of negative music.. because there is none... either your a half full or half empty person.... it is a personality trait which may influence what you listen to... NOT the other way around. No amount of negative music will make someone negative.... a person chooses to be negative. To surmise that some outside influence, such a music, has the power to change who a person is... is well ludacris.

I definatly agree that you have to be careful what you expose your kids too. Thats why I am looking into this, basically just trying to sort through the mindless pop and find some music with a positive message, jammxkids seems pretty good so far their message seems to be about getting active, eating healthy... etc.
