I mean spellcasters should have a spell tree where they can choose which spells they want to upgrade. For example this might be the mages spell tree...
Magic Missle
Pre-requisities: None
Max Level: 5
1: Damage 9-22@10 - 4+(0.5*lvl) to 12+(0.5*lvl)
2: Damage 15-30@10 - 10+(0.5*lvl) to 20+(1*lvl)
3: etc...
Lightning Bolt
Pre-requisities: Magic Missle Level 1
1:
2: etc....
Chain Lightning
Pre-requisities: Lightning Bolt Level 4
1:
2:
Sunbolt
Pre-requisites: Magic Missle Level 1
1:
2:
Fireball
Pre-requisities: Sunbolt Level 2
Meteor Swarm
Pre-requisities: Fireball Level 3
etcetc.....
So basically you learn magic missle as your first spell (or skill). After learning that you satisfy the requirements for learning a fire or lightning skill, lightning bolt or sunbolt. These skills will have a level restriction on them so you can either raise magic missle up a few levels, or save your skill points (tokens) until you can learn the higher skills. Later skills will be expensive to learn. Something like magma blast would require level 5 dragonfire and level 8 mana flux.
This would lead to a very interesting combination of skills on characters customizable by the user. I have no idea how it could be programmed tho.
Also this is based off the skill system in Ragnark Online which i played for a little while, there might be better systems out there.
I can actually think of a number of ways to make that work..I think it might be wierd looking if i sold spell scrolls..ie...like on a bbs every spell says you cant use..rather than too powerful....hurm. I like the idea..I wouldnt want mages to be elemental..thats for the druids..hurmmm...so interesting..i got a long work shift in the morning to think about how i'd like these things to work...I'll post an idea. I'm wondering if there is someway to get this information in a characters look desc...i doubt it..but..hurm...still very cool.. I'll give it a run...if it has any playablity worth I'll try it out. Playablility worth means like...would it just be annoying..or would it be cool..and do I have the ability to give each power set a justification for existance...Like a druid specializing in fire...ouch.. that could be rough..or should it..and i'm fairly certain I'd have to rework all my exp tables/damage %'s. On my bbs i'm making mana/mana rgen be very similar to base line..ie it sucks...but i'm going to allow spellcasters to whomp shit...ie i'm lowering all monster MR so that 50 is high..so spellcaster are both powerful..but still not overpowered in pvp.
