The military has helped a lot of people become better people and more employable. I think that the disgruntled few you're hearing from are the minority. I can go dig up a bunch that would say just the opposite of what others have, like that bogus FTN site.

Bacon, you can tell you friend that shes a dumbass for trusting anything a recruiter didn't put down on paper, though I'm sure she already knows. They'll put you where they need you and if thats in the shit shoveling dept, then there you go. You've got to know before you go in. I only really have experience with the airforce, but I can tell you that airmen have no business having families--if they screw up and end up with 3 kids at 22, they've fucked themselves over more than the military ever could. There are, however, resources for them--free diapers in the airforce, for example.

I have to disagree with you, Reck. I've several friends who got out of the military only to find that they've been trained, yes, but for military purposes. Which means jack shit in the real world. You might have experience, but what kind of experience is it? Two of my friends right now are working as bouncers at a couple of night clubs because they can't find a job, and that's plain jacked up. This guaranteed placement crap they talk about is just that, crap.

Hobo, 3 people out of millions. Do you see the discrepancy? I was referring to more than job skills. The fact that unemployment is at all time highs is more of a reason why your friends have those jobs instead of what they were trained in. I've never heard of guaranteed placement.

Have you spoken to a recruiter? I have.. he guaranteed me "job placement" after I was done with my 6 year term. It's bullshit. And 3 people that *I know personally*, that's not 3 out of millions, bro, because if I know 3, someone else does too.. THAT'S a discrepancy. If you were referring to more than job skills, that's cool, because yes, you do have benefits and shit from being in the service, but I *was* referring to job skills, so :P.. Don't take this angry rant post personally btw, just irritates me that our government takes "such good care" of people who serve and sacrifice.

and before you say it, yes, I know, recruiters will say anything to get you to sign up.. but that's a misrepresentation of the government's intentions, and many people join only to find that they've been lied to.

Yes, I have spoken to a recruiter. He never once promised me job placement. He did tell me to lie when I got to MEPS though. Which I didn't and thus the reason I didn't get in. I have many friends that have said the military is the best thing that's ever happened to them. I think there are benefits and drawbacks, as with EVERY job. If you're depending on recruiters to be honest, you're a fool. That's like believing the used car salesman is selling a car that's in mint condition.

You're trusting in someone who's trying to sell something. Do you buy everything that's solicited to you on the phone? Caveat emptor applies to any interaction with a salesperson.
