Do you really think that will ever happen, though? It's rather idealistic, to think all these people who have had ethnic rivalries for countless years will suddenly all join together in a nice happy government.

Actually, that's kinda what America did, but we are still working out our racist qualities and becoming equals....It takes time to change the way people think..it will take just as long, perhaps longer, for them...but it is possible.

They hate each other as much as the extremists hate us. I don't forsee them working together.

I'd agree that's true for American society, but not American government.

Voodoo Chile had said he thought we could "establish a working, cohesive government that represents ALL Iraqis" ... we don't even have something like that in America. The US Senate is almost entirely rich, white, and Christian; it's almost completely minority-free. The House of Reps is slightly better in terms of that, but still, the percentage of elected officials who belong to a given minority is *vastly* lower than that minority's percentage in the US population.

So regarding the U.S. being able to help establish an Iraqi government that is both democratic yet also has equal ethnic representation... the chances are nonexistant... we can't even get that in our OWN country, let alone create one in another country.

make them establish quotas in their government like our government requires of businesses. That's the "business should reflect the diversity of the neighborhood" guise that isn't really a quota! lol

Off the topic off Iraq for a minute. Can you believe our government lately? I swear they try to take away another right every week. For instance the "illegal to have your cell phone on in a public theatre" I dont understand how the governmant can set a law against something we legally paid for. If the theatres didnt want us to have cell phones on, it's their right as an american business to say no cell phones. Since when is it alright for the government to come in and change that? It's been really pissing me off. And public smoking bans. I understand smoking is bad for you, but it is LEGAL. How can they make it ok to smoke in some places and not in others? Like carbon monoxide from cars isnt hurting americans standing outside? I don't know. I think we as americans should stand up and stop letting them strip away our freedoms one by one. This week it's cell phones, next week it's fatty foods taxes.

It's that whole freedom thing in action again! Wait, we're not free when the government tells businesses they can and can't do things or run the business as they see fit. I respect the right for non-smokers to eat dinner without having plumes of smoke anywhere near them. I don't however believe that they should be forced to disallow smoking if they have seperate ventilation systems in the smoking and non-smoking areas. They should be free to choose how they want to run their business. If they do want to allow smoking they should have that right. It's rather ironic if ya think about how much money smokers donate to the government each year. Without cigarettes, our government would have to raise income tax or start some other new tax, perhaps they could tax fresh air or water.

I've been out all weekend, yes, I'm bringing this back from a couple days ago.

Read first, talk later? I'm not an idiot, and I can read. I know you said joking, I said hatred. I was contradicting what you said. You said people don't HATE Americans, I said they do.

Think first...

But you're right. Canadians don't spend all the money we do on military because they don't run around like the worlds mother.

Plat, check what I wrote. I quoted Reckless, not you. Read first, talk later. (lol, just fucking with you)

Don't give them any ideas!!! heh

Yes, I agree with you guys on this..Government is yet again sticking their noses where it is unneeded. Most theatres have a short clip that askes viewers to turn off their phones and pagers. I've seen them for over a year in theatres now. Does the government really need to step in now and make it a law? What are they going to do, have police come in and watch the movie for free, waitin for a pager or phone to go off, then arrest or ticket them? That would be reather stupid really..

As for the smoking bans...As a non-smoker, I would think it's a good thing to keep all you nasty smokers from stinking up my eating environment..but as a person, I can't smell squat anway..having had a broken nose since age 15, I just can't smell anything when my nose actually works ;)

Either way, government didn't need to step in here either, businesses don't need to be told how to run themselves. They know how to seperate smokers and nonsmokers. If there needs to be laws, it should just be that to have a smoking section should require a seperate ventilation/ac system, and thats it.

Isn't this a capitalist society where it's free business with minimal government intervention? Obviously our government has forgotten its role  :whip:

It's a much greater issue than being able to smoke in restaurants and bars down here. They put it as a referendum on the last election ballot and it won. Go figure.

Onto another topic. Has anyone heard about the classroom size amendment in Florida? Anyone else have opinions on it? I believe it was a horribly irresponsible thing to vote yes for by the voters for some very good reasons. A) California and Oregon have both tried it and are looking into ways to get out of it. B) It will most certainly cause a state income tax (we don't have one in FL). C) Regardless of all the financial implications. It is highly impractical, although a very good idea, it simply won't work because we'll be putting forth teachers at a fast-food pace that are no better qualified than the ones we have now. I understand there are quite a few good teachers, but on the whole they are lacking.
