rofl.. my girl's brother is in the navy, hasn't got any complaints besides the fact that he can't puff or anything while he's in. He gets paid decent money, not awesome, but what do you expect, he's got room and board.. He has big ass studs in his ears, takes em out when he goes on duty, has tattoos, so that kinda shit flies just fine I guess. This isn't something you take someone else's word for tho, you're signing your life away to the government, and that has to be taken very seriously. Just think if your life would be better in or out, if you've nothing to lose, go for it, if you're leaving a life behind, fuck it.. just my 2 cents, someone who got turned down by the air force for having an "inappropriate tattoo".... what's wrong with swastikas?? :P

unless youre the kind of person who has been wanting to enlist for sometime and actually had the desire to look into it yourself, it aint a good idea. recruiters get bonuses depending on the number of suckers they get to join up. to them youre already a number, theyll tell you whatever you want to hear to get you to agree to sign your life away for four years. example: friend of mine was told theyd get a certain initial pay, pick their home port, and would spend a certain (estimated, of course) amount of time underway (among many other things). pay is just now getting to be what was initially stated (after two years enlistment), theyre assigned to some port in BFE, and their last tour was supposed to be about 3 months (its going on 10 now).

so if its something you have wanted to do, do it. if youre considering it because the opportunity suddenly presented itself, forget it, youlll spend the next four years figuring out how to get an honorable discharge. wow weird, i just got a cpl postcards from guam, nice timing. pfffffffffffffffffffft navy:bs:

the thing people don't understand is, recruiters don't have the authority to promise much. When you enter, you are property of the US government.

That's one person's view because I guess he had higher expectations, didn't think he'd have to work, whatever. I wouldn't put a lot of weight on that story if you're trying to make that decision.

Bottom line is this - many of our servicemen's family (all branches of the military) are currently ON WELFARE, receiving FOOD STAMPS, and barely making it while their husbands / wives whatever are touring. Unless you have a college degree under your belt before you join, you will start with the lowest rank, lowest pay that they can get away with giving you. There are alot of promises, mostly empty and inflated well beyond the recruiter's means to deliver. If you intend to go in for life, by all means, do it, because the longer you're in the more you get. But if you've got a mind of your own, you'll have a hard time.

see im lucky, I get around that whole welfare shit cuz im single and all the money I make goes to ME! fuck all the bullshit. Yes I am going in, and I will get on here as soon as possible so I can tell u if I like it or not. Hell for all I, or any of you know I may love it. going in as enlisted kinda sucks, I'd hold off til you have your degree and can start off at OIS instead of enlisted boot.

Good luck bro, I hope everything works out for ya. Some of us just aren't cut out for a life of servitude. :P But again, you can reap some benefits if you know how to work around the system. You are single, so it won't be as bad - free room and board, and you get a paycheck, so it's not too much to spit at. Me, personally, I just can't sell myself short, especially to a government that takes as much as it can get and gives little, IMHO. But again, good luck. ;)
