well if you're going to put effort into something why not protect it. especially if you complain about it for 11 years.
truth be told, 'piracy' never hurt doormud. nobody used the doormud crack. anybody that wanted to register it, DID register it to support evan.
dont want to drag up 11 years of crap though. whats done is done and i'm glad this keygen is out there so someone besides bbsfiles' doug has it. he charges money for 'vanity registrations' from cracks other people give him. doormud would have just been the next in the list.

you say that like its easy to do. If it were easy for things not to be hacked then Adobe and Microsoft and many other large company's can't stop their software from being pirated. You can say what you will about his reasoning but I do not blame him one bit.

It's easy to arm chair quarterback the decision isn't it? If I wrote some software in my free time that I intended to sell, the existance of a crack for my program would be enough for me to stop working on it. Imagine if you showed up at your job tomorrow and your boss informed you that because everyone was just stealing whatever you happen to produce that you would no longer get paid by the company because they are no longer making money off of your product.
It's not all that different.

If I wrote some software in my free time that I intended to sell, the existance of a crack for my program would be enough for me to stop working on it. See contrary to popular culture, stealing software is not cool. Developers who want to be paid for their work tend to stop working when they feel they will no longer be paid.

what i'm really saying was the bringing up the existence of the crack was an EXCUSE. a way to back out when bored and still try to save face. he did say 'hey i'm the only guy actively developing stuff' so it's hard to back out when you are obligated.

i recall a canadian study that tracked music downloaders. these people ended up buying more

well i think you're making some broad references and generalizations. this was just a bbs doorgame and everyone
that wanted it, registered it. couldn't have worked out any better for the author, in my opinion.
sure stuff got boring and he was building on old code. he moved onto bigger and better things. FINE, tell it like it is, dont use some lame excuse about software piracy.
i'm one of the biggest forerunners in the bbs community and i dont know of ONE bbs that ran the cracked doormud.
one more thing: I'm sure if there are people that want to continue to register doormud they will donate, if they feel
