I wasn't saying you were overly mean, Syn, I almost always agree with what you say. I was just pointing out that to him the first post being one that was negative might have been a bit of a downer.. And being polite is BS 90% of the time, but that doesn't make it any less polite.. shrug.. I was just voicing my opinion is all.

Ahh... No grudge is being witheld...

It's good to hear criticism in ways, it just could have been worded a bit differently. I respect you and what you do for MMB Syntax, don't get me wrong.

I owned and operated a board by the same name about 5-6 years ago. Became quite popular. Got married and had to take it down... So no, I am not new at opping... Just don't care much for the flare and pizzazz for something that someone only see's when they are logging on.

And yes... I didn't put up a 'board' if that's how you prefer to put not having ansi menus... I put up a mud, which I want users to enjoy.

Have a great day.

I have to agree with Syntax. When I logon and see the normal WELCOME! screen, it's not that I think it lacks flash, it's that I feel like the sysop doesn't care. And if the sysop only puts an hour's worth of work into a board, how bad will he feel if his porn needs cause the board to shut down? Probably not much. I don't mean to paint all uber-stock boards with a broad stroke, but first impressions are everything. Not like we're all super special, but if you want us to play on your board, shouldn't you make it *unique*? And you don't have to have 8k ANSI art to be unique.

And as for globals, please god install them.

What really fries my eggs? BBSes that have settings contrary to what they advertise. If your mmud entrance message says "20 lvl PvP" and your realm really has PvP shutoff completely because, "it messes up people's megamuds, making them attack each other for some reason," you're wasting people's time. And for the love of god people, if you're going to post MME files, make sure they're not from mid January and completely out of date. It's sloppy. Which, again, shows how much you care...

Nothing on my bbs is contrary to what is advertised. I'm not sure if you are referring to my board in your last paragraph or not. Pvp level difference is 5 levels, and the board has globals.

No no - sorry about that - not in reference to your board. It's was me bitching about another place (which I won't name)

You mean if they happen to be at keys when MegaMUD is logging on. =)

focus on the mud, if I want a bbs or the fluff of ansi and globals etc.. I am not going to look for that in these forums or on your bbs. There are but a few things people really care about reading the ads here and all of them have to do with the game, not the fluff. Hell, even the ad templates go a bit far.

Most want ONLY game info, or they really have better places to look than these forums. Reading I hear most bbs that post have ansi, who gives a damn? It has been my experience that MOST don't care to document very well either. I can think of only a hand full, for example that create ingame help files for edits and changes from stock.

Ansi and globals are fine, build a good game though and few really give a damn. What is truely annoying are muds (lets stop the shit, people are here for the MajorMud games NOT the bbses) that make changes, tell only a few what they are, and restrict creatation to insure it takes 100 times longer than it should to understand the new "game" limts.

Screw globals and ansi, make good changes, document them in the help files (avoid throwing up a quick web page you have no intention of keeping up to date) and your efforts will be far more valuable to your user base. Your "level of caring" will be 1000 fold more clear than by installing the standard fluff, cause 'most others have...' If I am reading bbs ads again it is for one reason... I am not satisfied with what "most others have done" I am looking for something better from you!

As for the template(s) keep it strictly to game tech info, I, and I would bet 90% of everyone else reading ads, scrolls through trying hard to avoid and ignor everything else. I for one would not even see "we have globals and ansi!" I DON'T GIVE A DAMN!!! give me new races, new classes, new areas to explore, not just script through, give me better than metro, don't expect me to spend yrs to see my character evolve, and give me the documentation in the game, or at very least in a up to date webpage. Give me something of interest! if you want to give ansi and other fluff later too, fine, but don't was't my time and yours "showing how much you care" outside the game it self, no one cares, no one will stay no matter how good your 'out of game fluff' is.

And for all those offering advice that had lil to do with the edited majormud game play on this advertised mud, shut the hell up!!! Stop providing more crap for me to scroll though, you signed on, and YES I want to know what you thought, but there is little or nothing that any listed here to tell me how this game is different, worth my time, or not worth my time... THE GAME. THE GAME. THE GAME. Tell me of the game, what do you know of the tech of the game now from your short time there...

I would guess, not lots, if the focus was fluff there, I am guessing, was not much else to learn in the short run. For all the scolding I probably will not sign on for that reason, but it would be so much quicker if those that posted, who's game knowlege all kinda have to respect, would have just said "at first glace, not much new to be gleaned here..."

So your up Mister Raiden, sir...

The template alone did not offer me something new, the bad reviews, despite the useless points seeming off topic to me, did carry some wieght in unintended ways. So If I sign on, are the "new rules" of 'reality' (your edits and changes from stock) going to be spelled out and interest me to "play" beyond starting my scripts to walk away from for a month or so? That is all I really care to know before creating my nth majormud account on your machine to quickly become bored with, to script ever more out of some sick need for a text death dealing fix...

Oh what will not do just to kill some more words in text :yeah: Raiden, mr God dude, save us all... give us new and interesting ways to slaughter all these evil groups of letters that haunt all our dreams in this majormud hell.

I agree that ansi menus and globals are "fluff" and that MajorMUD is the primary and usually only reason for a bbs. The reason I don't agree with just saying "who cares" is because they literaly take 5 minutes to add. You don't need full blown ansi graphics, just change the damn default stuff. Globals are the same thing. One 5 minute install and then you're done.

What I'm noticing is the people that seem to care about this are people that have co/sysoped BBS's themselves. I'm going to guess it's because we see that damn green and yellow text so often when setting up BBS's left and right and not bothering to change it on test boxes. Then when we see it on a production board it just feels like some 13 year old installed mud and threw it up.

I'm only trying to make people understand *my* opinion.

We feel your pain syntax. I still don't care, but I did understand you enough to get you did not see a whole lot eles to talk about. Had the mud it self just blown you away, or really even left you with a clue it was promising with what you saw in the short stay, I doubt the "fluff", or lack there of, would have found mention in a review.

Honestly though, I have played enough majormud games that I don't see anything till the lil screen asks for a race/class choice. Most having mega, they don't pay attention till then either. More menus just means having to create new scripts to auto create user account and PW and then get to where the game is. what "only takes 5 seconds" to create, requires 5 seconds for the mega heads to basicly "redisable" so it does not slow down logging on when one returns.

This idea of "caring" forces just about all to redo log on script and scan through crap they really have no interest in just to get back into the game. Not a big deal. Not any deal really, but you have that, waste my damn time and have stock majormud or totally retarded edits I have jump though hoops for nothing.

Don't tell the newbies to go for fluff first, let the game be the focus first so it is at least worth my time to redo my logon scripts! I for one would rather a pleasent surprise starting the game seeing everything stock to that point (that costs me only an address paste and a click) than 5 min resetting scripts so all the cool menus and stuff fly by in scroll (as fast as my cpu can make it happen)so I do not have to see them, only to get to a game that is stock or worse.

Let the fluff stay out or come last, at least you will not be wasting others' time. Menus for most, that are not stock, are ONLY a bit more inconvence for the user. Doesn't take much to be worth the time, but some creating new muds do not even give enough to make one want to bother after finally having gotten to the game.

I do see your point, your point in the wrong hands, though, just costs players a bit more time when deciding the majormud game wasn't worth even the paste and click, let alone the rewritting of a loggon script...the first thing most will do before even getting to the game so there is no delay next time with "new super cool menus".

*You* don't see anything until the race/class screen. Do you think for everyone? There are a lot that do think the same as you. All I'm trying to explain is there are A LOT of people who think my way too.

Not any deal really, but you have that, waste my damn time and have stock majormud or totally retarded edits I have jump though hoops for nothing.

If you do the menus before you bring up the BBS for the first time (again, a matter a 5 minutes) then you don't have to worry about people needing to change their logon scripts. You could even use all of the same wordings/script triggers that megamud is setup for and then they wouldn't need to change a thing.

Don't tell the newbies to go for fluff first, let the game be the focus first so it is at least worth my time to redo my logon scripts! Again, i fail to see your point here because editing majormud and taking 5 minutes one time to change 2 ansi menus are two totally different things.

If you saw my point you wouldn't have written this long post to tell me how I'm wrong.
