Basically you can sum up what you're trying to do down there whether subconciously or knowingly, rallying up support using intimidation of the "unknown", people who haven't seen VisualBasic before, are more likely to be "impressed" and support you on your tangents down there, then people who are really coders, so your "fan basis" and support are very minimal to me. I use wine (http://www.winehq.org) and it doesn't react very well to the {msvb60}.dlls and libraries required by nightmare and other programs you have written that could have otherwise been useful to me, like winterhawk's path installation program (good idea to save time) but if written in c, the program wouldn't require all those runtimes, and really doesn't require all the unnessacary gui things to perform the functions that can be written in a .bat script... (i'm not bashing you or anything, just wish some things were written more friendly for others in my position... there are few, but they do exist).

In MSVC++ you can even statically link libraries in so you don't have any dll's at all.

Nightmare was created by Donut, it was made in VisualBasic (a language anyone can learn in a week) it's object oriented meaning you add buttons and such and program how they act on certain events.



True, but unless you're talking about the most basic of programs, you're still dealing withe the code. Also, but simplifying object oriented programing like that, I wonder if you truely understand what it means. The "object" doesn't refer to literal objects only - just that you can create "objects" (i.e. classes and to a certain extent structs in c++) of anything - a car for example. You take this car object, add attributes, methods, and other stuff to it - like giving it a function addPassangers(Person name), or giving it an engine with certain attributes, like HP, CCs, cylinders, etc (the engine probably being another object). Then you can just instantiate a "car" to use in your program without having to redefine or even know all of the methods. It allows you to forget what goes into a car and just use it. Okay, so I'm not that good at explaining it, but you're horribly oversimplifying it. I've developed c++, java, and perl/tk programs all using an IDE similar to that of VB. It doesn't make the code behind it any less important.



Syntax is basically a maintainer, he keeps the code working for the current releases of MajorMUD.

I think we all need to evolve, I personally see MajorMUD dying more so then ever. Metropolis has stated to me that they no longer can afford to pursue illegal pirated bbs's. They also told me I caused them a great deal of trouble, not so much with the piracy, but ljnedit, President of mutliservice spent 20grand on hiring 2 coders to redesign the databases so ljnedit would no longer work in newer releases, they also removed `SYS *' from the public release completely. The person who allowed the beta board to be vulnerable was fired, and shannon/issac lost several days of work due to reorgnization.





So wait, how is it dying? Come on, I've heard majormud is dying since it came out. After all, who the hell is playing a textbased fantasy rpg in 2004? Oh, wait, we all are. If Metro really can't keep up the fight, wouldn't that be the *start* of muds becomming more editted in order to stay competetive? Wouldn't that be a revolution won? Not saying it wouldn't be nice to have them working on added stuff and bug work outs, but what left is there to do that can't be done with editting? You're upset because you're trying to run Nightmare on a *nix box through wine and can't? Jesus. Drop an email to Microsoft and tell them their shitty Office program sucks, as well as c++, because it won't install and run under wine. Yeah, see how rediculous that is? (And yes, I'm aware of OpenOffice and StarOffice - this is an example). Last I checked, WorldGroup doesn't run under wine, and MegaMud *barely* does (had problems with the Game Data stuff). And you're upset that Nightmare doesn't run under it? Am I the only one who sees how fucking dumb that request is?



As for the actual code, I don't care if it's HTML, 24,000 lines of added code is a lot.

The impact I caused was with ljnedit (i gained access to the beta board), like i said metro lost 20grand for a new coder, and fired someone for allowing their server to be vulnerable... that's when i got a cease and desist order (to me it was kindof surprising that to them, it was that big of a deal) 20grand just to fix a problem is kindof big...



another thing that changed, was how edited bbs's happened, instead of the infamous wccupda2.dat being removed, and causing regen problems, from ljnedit wccupda2.dat compilation was inspired, which solved a lot of regen problems and such..
