Mage-1 seems to be basically for combat enhancing spells. So a mage-1 class has 2 problems. It steps on the feet of warlocks and and basically creates another melee specialist. There are plenty of combat specialists in majormud. With a mage-1 class you basically just have a warlock without attack spells or maybe a ninja that has to bless, either way it looks to me as all thats created is a combat class.

Agreed.. New Classes are always fun though ;) The everpopular Wardancer.

As for scale armour, scale armour in majormud has been specifically made to support the very weak class of witchunters. So it seems that adding a scalemail class could make witchunters even more dull than before.

True, But you could add a new scale class with some interesting abilities. I've seen the Scalemail Kai Combat class be somewhat popular, a little useless, but none the less a fun class.

Chainmail, however, does seem to be under used. However its very difficult to create an entire class around using chainmail.

The lunar chainmail is pretty decent, maybe add a few twists to a new class with Chainmail? Chainmail, Druid-2, Combat-2?.. Chainmail, Combat-4, Mage-1? Just alot of silly variations you could throw in.. It of course would make a stock realm unbalanced. ;)

I suppose my prejudice is mainly that I hate for new classes to step into an old classes niche. If i was going to create a new class, I'd prefer to start with a blank slate. Rather than thinking druid-2 or Mage-1 I'd like to start from what would I like this class to do. Then I'd have to make a way for that class to do what Im looking for. Then ensure that the class is balanced in the majormud system, which would envolve mainly looking at the new classes ability to gain experience but also its ability to affect other classes.
