We can't overlook our past, but we also can't let others to use it as a crutch. I agree in that sense, but this all leads back to what it is to be American. You have the freedom to be whoever you want to be, however you want to be, and whatever you want to be. If that makes them happy, how does it hurt anyone else? Now granted, there are a number of problems with some of the role models kids have nowadays. The likes of NWA, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew were "bad" role models when I was growing up, but you can't group everyone into stereotypes. The African-Americans were treated in violation of the constitution from 1865-1960. I'd like to see the whites (including myself) be mistreated and treated as sub-humans like they were and see how long they remember it and stay bitter about it. You can't forget about this, it's part of our history and shows what scumbags like Strom Thurmond did to destroy the great country our forefathers and then later administrations helped build. Our country stands for diversity and freedom. If we can't live up to that now, we're doomed to a quicker decline than anyone expects.

Intergration does not work. It hasn't worked here and it hasn't worked anywhere else in the world. Diversity ultimately causes in strife and civil war. I will give you a few examples: Sierra Leone (christians vs. muslims), Israel/Palestine (jews vs. muslims), Zimbabwe (blacks vs. whites), S. Africa (blacks vs. whites), Kashmir (muslim vs. hindu), Yugoslavia (croats vs. muslims vs. serbs), Iraq (kurds vs. arab), Northern Ireland (protestants vs. catholics), Australia (aboriginal vs. whites).
Now if you really think DIVERSITY is working in America why then do we still need affirmative action programs forty years after the civil rights movement?
People that constantly preach about diversity and intergration are obviously ignorant of world events and historical facts.

I know states-rights was the biggest cause of the civil war, but slavery also played a significant part. Civil rights rights riots in the 60s. L.A. riots in '92. etc, etc, etc.
I'll sum up America's diverse past for you: One war, hundreds of riots, segregation, ku klux klan, the nation of islam, Rodney King, the ACLU, the NAACP, affirmative action, slave reperations, and thousands of lives lost.
So spare me the freedom and diversity crap and how great America is because of it. It hasn't worked in S. Africa, India, numerous places in Africa and Europe and Israel, so what makes you think it will work in America?

I don't believe S. Africa is a worse place now that apartheid is gone. I don't think Europeans look at a race, other than whether the person is American or not (which brings much worse disdain than any racist could).
I don't believe in affirmative action so I couldn't very well argue it vigorously. However, if you think that racial discrimination is a thing of the past, you're living in a fantasy world. I don't think anyone should be discriminated against. It should be about who the most qualified for the job is. End of story. You shouldn't turn someone down because they are Iranian, Indian, Black, White, Purple, Green....there is still a need for some oversight on racial discrimination, but affirmative action is in it's fundamental principals illegal under the law of the land.
What makes me think it will work in America? I think people opening their eyes and seeing that every person is different. There are blacks out there that are plain evil, but that doesn't mean they all are. All whites aren't evil, but some are. You can't, as the cliche goes, judge a book by it's cover. I think racism is deplorable, but you can have pride in your heritage. Don't forget though, without black troops, the country would still be divided and probably under the fascist rule of a psychopathic fiend.
You can't force people to like others, but you can make an atmosphere open to diversity. Were there any race riots during 9-11? Was the population of NYC working in conjunction with each other? It can happen, it's just a shame that it only happens during times of horrible strife.

I didn't even read most of the posts in this thread, because to tell the truth not many of them were worth reading. I was
"inducted" into a white power organization when I was 12 years old, and since then have been a part of Neo-Nazi gangs, KKK rallies... blah blah.. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I finally realized I was a moron and dropped out of the "racist scene" completely. I have 5 hispanic nephews and a newborn hispanic niece, and my sisters have been skeptical of my being around them because of the fact that I am racist, and have tattoos to show this. Many times my nephews have asked me what my swastikas mean, or the lightning bolts, and I really don't know what to tell them besides "oh it's just a picture". I'm proud of the fact that I'm white, but that doesn't mean I have to demean other races or feel that I'm superior, either mentally or physically. But truthfully, the plain fact is that in my state, California, white folks have become the minority. You can argue all you'd like, but I went through 4 different high schools because of this fact. And I don't think the issue is that white people are trying too hard, I think it's that negros are still trying to use the "slavery" card, 140 years after they were freed, and getting away with it. Hispanics are using the welfare card, and quite well, and yes, caucasians are on welfare too, don't get me wrong. What the problem is, is that a few people of each race have created a bad name for the rest, I believe n*gg*r is an attitude, not a color. I have friends now of all nationality, and although it's still hard to keep the hatred out of my heart, all I have to do is look at my nephews and I remember why I chose not to be stupid anymore.
