different speed CPU's are all made the same way and they actually don't make a 1.2, a 2.0, a 1.6, etc. they make all the chips and then test to see what speed they can go up to without becoming unstable. the chips speed is all depdentant on the quality of the components and the quality of the contruction. and since the chips are made from so many minerals and elements the final outcome varies. this is also why overclocking is possible. of course there is a range for the lowest and highest it will go based on whatever technology they're using to make the chips. the rarer picks of the litter would be the higher speed and more pricy chips.

this is true, but have you seen the website for buying an unlocked processor? something like an AMD 1600+ running at 2.6 GHz (not 2600+), which is more than double its speed. it runs cool also, because it's unlocked. also, it's only like $100... the processor has had the power to go that fast from the get-go, it just had to be unlocked from it's AMD-set maximum operation speed...

Who is saying AMD's run cool? You're smoking crack. I have an AMD 1.4ghz and it runs around 110 degrees generally. I refuse to buy pentium like syntax said, the price of pentiums is too high for the lack of performance boosts. The only good thing about pentiums is the hyper threading they have on some of their processors. AMD all the way though.

well, either way if you don't go retail for cpu, you're missing out because getting a custom fan that will work well with the cpu is a huge pain in the ass and a lot more $$

um...your right Ray...Wait, did you ever hear about how the early P4's overheating? So much that they fried days later, in some cases hrs later.ivenever seen a problem like that with amd and i certainly dont know of any chip thats what, 110??

Even with all the fans in the world, you have to keep that damn thing at 70 or close to it! Wtf kinda fans you got in your machine, turbine jet engines that suck cold air into it???

i've had 3 AMDs fry, w/o overclockin first. i bought a 2200+ when it first came out OEM, my $30 fan and copper heat sink had the cpu running at 73 degrees celcius... you can't tell me that isn't hot...



i had to buy a $60 heat sink and fan that runs louder than hell just to get the bastard under 60 degrees celcius, and on normal load it will stay about 58 degrees now...



AMD runs hotter than hell, and it's annoying. my laptop has a pentium 4 2.4 ghz and it runs 15 degrees cooler on the biggest load

as if it matters, because I don't know anything, but im running amd and have had no problems in the year and a half i've had this computer.

Only once have I had an AMD chip run hot, and all I did was switch out the MB with the same processor and it ran fine. I haven't had much luck overclocking, but I don't know much about that, so.. Bottom line, AMD is better than Intel, cost-wise, speed-wise.. I have a P4 right now, but only because it was the fastest processor I had from old gear I've kept from customer upgrades.

AMD's don't run under 100 degrees in my experiences, although I've never spent the extra cash on case fans and what not. Anything above 140 degrees farenheit is considered acceptable. I don't think Pentiums are very stable at 110 degrees Farenheit.
