my mod chip is used for playing imported games, which is what it is intended for. it just so happens that it can play really scratched games and burned games as well :)
a sad day
Re: a sad day
Its nice to see that the government would spend lots of money to attempt to stop hackers (like that would EVER happen) instead of spending the money elseware to make improvements to the nation such as feeding our poor and homeless or trying to create jobs in the US instead of letting every major industry we have up and move to taiwan or mexico. Our govt needs to pull thier head out of thier asses and get real. As long as there is a computer program being developed there will be someone waiting to crack it and pass it around. For the federales to think that for one minute they can put an end to all of this is just asinine! I bet they wear tin-foil hats when they work on projects that try to probe deep space and use a "magic 8-ball" to determine if we should go to war with Iraq or something.
For once our government needs to do something worthwhile with its time.

Re: a sad day
You contradict your own argument zan. Piracy causes unemployment. When the software companies lose money on potential sales, they are forced to cut jobs. The problem will be around for eternity and there's really not much they can do about it. This is a step towards protecting jobs, however unpopular the opinion is.
Re: a sad day
no, Piracy creates jobs. Companies need to hire people to create updates to securities and to bypass crack hacks. Without piracy those people would not be needed. Look at C&C generals, they are scrambling to create new security patches to get around the hackers so only legit games can play on C&C servers. Also look at MOHAA:spearhead. They came out with a way of telling if the reg codes were legit or not. That creates jobs.

Re: a sad day
If the companies have the capital to invest in that sort of technology. How many small software companies can afford to hire the caliber people needed for such a task?
Re: a sad day
zan, sorry, but you're wrong in my opinion. 1 job for the security guy to find holes doesn't weigh out to the 5000 people that lose their job when the company goes under. the government does spend money on homeless and shit like that, and lots of it. it's not like they're taking 25% of the budget and using it towards fighting piracy. the people (FBI/DOJ/PD) that take down hackers and piraters are people with one general job, upholding the law. whether they're stopping people from getting stabbed or locking up mod chip sellers, they're being paid for one general job.
i personally think the problem with software and there being so much piracy is the cost of it. how can you say that windows 2000 server ($1,000 for a 5 user license) can cost almost the same amount of money of a used car. hmm, lets think .... get to work every day and be able to travel, or have my computer run a little better even though i could do everything it does for free with something like linux -- yeah that's a tough choice. adobe photshop is what, $650+? get real. you'd have to work 93 hours of work (@$10/hr) to buy that. is adobe photoshop really worth two and a half weeks of work?

Re: a sad day
I have to agree w/ syn on the cost thing. However, there will always be a sector that believes any price is too much and thus pirate it. Look at DoorMud, Evan isn't trying to get rich off of it and charges a very reasonable fee. Yet, he has recently heard of people distributing his. The price does need to come down on some of the major software, but there are major personality flaws in those that steal software that costs $20.
Re: a sad day
I do believe that the cost is too much but piracy does have its limits. There is no sort of appology for hacking DoorMUD, the game is 20 bucks and well worth it so why not buy it, If I ran a dedicated bbs I would drop 20 ina heartbeat to purchase the product since I have used it before. I believe that if you pirate something then use the program (whatever it may be game or application) for more then 3 days and you enjoy it then you should buy it, I have bought countless games and applications that way. I downloaded the game, enjoyed it then went out and purchased it to support those people so that they can continue to make quality software. Some games I pre-ordered before I even tried them, Warcraft 3 and Neverwinter Nights are just 2 examples. 650 is unreal for photoshop and also windows related products but those companies are targetting the businesses. Some company that has three thousand employees that use windows based computers have no choice and they NEED to purchase legit keys because if an auditor comes a knockin they can be out of business real quick if they are using pirated equipment.
*edit* just to clarify above, Ive used the product DoorMUD on MorbidBBS, I didnt mean I used a hacked copy to try out the game on my own PC.
