LOL... yeah, there's a bunch of factors here regarding class balance:

- Mages and Druids are excellent boss killers, since they can go in with full HP and SP, and use up all their SP in one fight and slaughter a boss. In most of ray's caps, thats what he does. When he runs out of SP, he probably gets squished (notice the leviathan cap? hehe). When fighting average monsters, tho, if a mage/druid uses SPs that heavily, they have to spend a lot of time waiting around for SP regen after every fight. Altho thats doable, its not particularly fun, and fun-factor is actually a small component that went into class balance.

- The green dragon is normally a monster from a level 16+ area, there just happens to be one in the bayou also. Don't be depressed if you have trouble killing it at lower levels ;)

- Knowing the mechanics of the doormud combat system helps a lot too. For example, when you run from a monster it gets a double HP/SP rest tick, but then doesn't additionally rest in real-time after that if no players are in its room. So if you've got some monster fairly injured but then need to run off, be sure to take the time to rest to full HPs. The amount of time you rest won't affect the monster's healing if no one is in its room.

- Paladins, Warlocks, and Shamen are all slightly harder to play at lower levels. They need to worry about str, int, and hea... it takes a while to get decent stat values since they have multiple important attributes. With these classes, don't bother pumping dex until very high level.

- As you can see, hitting level 9 and getting Flame Strike is very, very nice for a paladin :) Some classes are just like that, weak at some levels, stronger at other levels...

- Getting decent items is also very important, as I guess you can see too now that you have your quest wep ;) Theres a lot of other items you can pick up by that level which you didn't have yet... better torso armor is key (blackened platemail or regular platemail), better shield is readily available (buckler shield)... there's a ton of magical items you could use too, but they're all quest-based, so you kinda have to check every day to see if the quests are in. Among the lower-lvl ones are Golden Bracers, Elven Cloak, Dwarven Boots, and Jewelled Belt. If you have bad luck and someone else always keeps getting these quests, some bosses later also drop these additionally, but its better to get them early. Another nice one to pick up is Mithril Crown, altho the regen on grendel takes quite a while.

check out the "quest items" section on the doormud webpage and then find those monsters on the doormud maps page

FYI, i started a monk that has 21 ac at level 1. he still gets his ass handed to him by level 1 monsters. i'm not surprised that 26 doesn't do much against a dragon

21 AC with a level 1 monk?? I'm guessing you picked Halfling? If so, thats probably why you're having trouble w/ level 1 monsters... The two most important attributes for Monks are Strength and Health, and halflings dont really have either of those... :(

i actually did some toying around with my race selection before i picked it. i figured the most important stats for a monk are dexterity and strength, with health being a tertiary atrribute. so i ranked all the races by those stats. halfling was tied with 2nd under goblin (iirc). i found the +4 ac bonus more useful than the +1 stat bonus.

i also checked the varying hit points and accuracy of a troll vs. a halfling. the hitpoint difference was minor, as was the accuracy difference. i'm not sure why you think halflings are so inferior. hitpoints aren't that important right now because i can run from any threat i have, then come back and finish it off. maybe it's different in the end game, but every class has their own max on stats. it seems to me that the best thing to use to decide upon your race is innate abilities and primary stat values.

troll regen is nice, but it only cuts down on your downtime. since you have limited monster fights per day, downtime doesn't mean a THING. that's why casters are so powerful.

plus, everyone plays troll monks :P and i was just exaggerating that i was "getting my ass handed to me". i was simply trying to argue that 21 ac at level doesn't really do much for you in the way of avoiding attacks (at level 1).

Dexterity is not very important for a Monk. Strength is a much better thing to go for, it affects accuracy significantly more than Dexterity does. Halfling and Goblin are both rather lacking for a Monk...

The help entries for the races list what classes they're good with, it's definitely good to follow that advice ;) The best Monk races are Dwarf, Troll, and Gnoll (not necessarily in that order, they're all about equal)

>i also checked the varying hit points and accuracy of a troll vs. a halfling. the hitpoint difference was minor, as was the accuracy difference.

That hitpoint difference may start out small, but the gap gets larger and larger with every level.

> i'm not sure why you think halflings are so inferior.

I designed all of the game formulas. I can very confidently say that a halfling is not a particually good choice for a monk. You can ignore my advice if you want, its up to you.

>troll regen is nice, but it only cuts down on your downtime. since you have limited monster fights per day, downtime doesn't mean a THING. that's why casters are so powerful.

Downtime may matter, depending on a few things. If you're a very patient person, I suppose resting a lot doesn't matter. But most MUD'ers arent that patient (heck, the majority can't even stomach MajorMud by hand!) Downtime also plays a bigger role w/ higher daily fights settings, and also in Pro mode (where resting takes 2x as long).

>plus, everyone plays troll monks :P and i was just exaggerating that i was "getting my ass handed to me". i was simply trying to argue that 21 ac at level doesn't really do much for you in the way of avoiding attacks (at level 1).

Eh, it's all straight percentages; chance to hit = your accuracy - enemy's AC. So a difference of a few % may not seem huge, but when you look at the big picture (ie, how many swings you're making in a day, and how many times monsters are swinging against you), it can make a major difference.

i have a troll ninja and a halfling monk. the monk has 90 accuracy without items or stances. he has 12 health, 13 strength, 18 dex and 9 int at level 4. my troll has 17 health, 15 strength, 10 dex, 9 int, but only has 88 accuracy without items.

the only thing my troll has over my monk is 7 hps (halfling has 60, troll has 67). both are level 4. now, class might affect your hp rolls per level, so this could be decieving.

i just don't see why halflings are so bad. i know you designed the game, and i'm not spitting on you. i'm just trying to figure why you're saying this. i like knowing the reasons for this shtuff rather than simply being told it and agreeing with it.

in the end, unless having higher health at lower levels yields more hps at higher levels, i don't even see why race matters much. your stats will cap out eventually. i realize that a troll, if he wants to, can max out his strength and health out much sooner than a halfling can. it just looks like dex means more to accuracy (and look at all that juicy ac i have).
