lol...well....a CPU is created to last 7+ years...do you plan on keeping it that long? Overclocking will reduce its life, but who can keep a cpu for 7 years? In 7 years..you will be able to still play MMUD with it..but thats prob about it :)



I Overclocked my ram from 266 to 324, and it was cheap ram. my 1600+ OUT performed a pent 2.0ghz



You tell me, a 1.4ghz amd 1600+ running FASTER then a pent 2.0ghz



and MUCH CHEAPER



I purchased my system in April for $2000, includes router/switch, scanner, dvd burner, keyboard/mouse, monitor, speakers blah blah blah



After overclocking...compared to Intel, you would need to spend $4000 just for the box(in april) and you still wont get a scanner dvd burner router



I overclocked my cd burner, from 40x to 48x...in fact..I didn't up the voltage or anything.



Lite-ON cd burners are the same hardware, just a BIOS change and there ya go.



Overclocking can be fun...and you do get a lot more performance out of your computer.



Its not just the CPU you overclock, its the WHOLE system



AGP bus, PCI bus, RAM, CPU, HDs, Sound cards...EVERYTHING.



Why run your front side bus at 133 when you can run it at 200??



I had mine at 162, only thing holding me back was the cheap ram.

I just wouldn't risk it for a little bit of extra power, I'd rather purchase new hardware. Computers are dirt cheap.

Well...a little bit of extra power...what do you call paying $2,000 for a whole setup, that is as powerful as a $4000 box?



I call that saving money :) I could have built 2 for the same price.



I compared using Sandra, and mad onion 3dbenchmarks 2001 SE, and my benchmarks were better then a pent 2.0, and my graphics at stable, were higher as well. Alienware, Gateway, Dell...NWFalcon, all of those mass produced and "computer tuning" companys still couldn't me.



I was getting 11,000+ stable on the mad onion 3dbenchmarks, with air cooling, and NO mods to the card...just tweaking settings, and overclocking.



Computers are dirt cheap...so why not OC them? Like your even going to keep that CPU for more then 3 years....in years, you will also need a new motherboard, most likely ram. You can build a decent computer box for just a few hundred dollars.



Now...I am running my 1600+ that I bought for $50 at the speed of a cpu that cost $100+(2100+ @ 1.73ghz)



CPU is fine. I had overclocked my ram to far, it was cheap ram and I didn't do enough research to find out that the ram was bad for overclocking...but now I find the pc3500 is stable at over 500mhz. The new Nforce2 chipsets allow you to lock your pci/agp bus, which is awesome! Higher overclocks, w/o corrupting data from the HD or graphics card. The new Tbred cpus come unlocked from the factory.



Nforce2 chipset, new tbred CPU, pc3500 ram....and you could do 200 fsb EASY



10mult from the cpu x 200 fsb = 2.0 ghz. I have a blower that puts out 160 cfm, and with the exhaust inside the case, and with the intake muffled(with a filter), you can hardly hear it.



Its more then a little power.



Running a 1.4ghz @ 2.0ghz..has been done and with the new hardware, its not all to hard to do...thats what?



ALMOST 25% more performance from your cpu...and if your computer runs at 166 FSB(333) and you boost it to 200+, then that also is a what? a 15% increase in overall system speed.



My math may be off..I am tired...oh well...I am not trying to convince anyone to start overclocking...I am just saying, if you get the right parts, and know what you are doing...its worth effort.

coming from a man who runs an 8 MB video card and refuses to upgrade until it dies? hehe

I run a 16MB video card. I will upgrade when I A) Really need to, or B) Can actually afford to. You do realize that I don't play graphical games very often, right? I have no need for a good video card. If I want to play a graphical game, that's what I have my ps2 for. What do I need a $150 video card for when all I do is play text games, surf the web, program, and talk online? I'm not a power-freak.

Chuckle, silly amd fan.. sigh. I built a p4 2.53 w/radeon 9700 pro, 512 meg pc4200 32-bit rdram, for under 2000.. 3dmarks stock at 15000, shrug.. yer saving no money by overclocking it.. but if you wish to torch yer components it dun bother me..

dude...I said I bought EVERYTHING back in APRIL, before they even HAD 8X AGP. Read my posts :)



I paid $2,000 for my system in APRIL, came with DVD-BURNER, SCANNER, ROUTER/SWITCH...I got more then just a box.



I paid for my system 8 MONTHS AGO.



How the hell can you compare your computer with a computer 8 months old?!? LOL



AMD is better then Intel, know why??



1) cheaper, amd 1600+ cost $50, Intel pent 1.6ghz cost $90.

2) Amd runs at 1.4ghz, and does MORE INSTRUCTIONS per clock cycle. WHICH MEANS, AMD runs at 1.4ghz, but does MORE WORK then a INTEL PENTIUM 1.6ghz.



Thats why when I overclocked my 1600+ to a 1.7ghz, I got higher benchmarks then a intel pent 2.0ghz. AMD 2100+ runs at 1.73ghz.



If I spent $2k now on an AMD system, yes, I bet it would score higher then yours.



Again...you score 15,000 default because you have 8X AGP.



I am saying I paid $2000 8 MONTHS AGO.



If you are trying to compare your Intel $2000 computer to my $2000 EIGHT MONTH OLD COMPUTER powered by AMD, then thats just sad...I wont tell anyone :)
