But it is mmud....right? Otherwise it had me fooled.

Vitoc, as I remember it...back when ForumsHQ started and there was an editing scene beginning....it was to break the monotony of MajorMUD. Don't expect people that wanted something different than the norm to be excited about a reincarnation of the norm. IMO it's a great accomplishment to have made mmud standalone without all the WG/MBBS garbage. I don't think we're trying to be negative, read on.

I just think those efforts could have been much more productive if they were used to build onto a Diku mud instead. They are already standalone muds that act as a telnet server, they are open source, and you don't really have to worry about licensing issues or responses from Metro. You wouldn't make money off of it, but you're not going to with the GreaterMUD project either. GreaterMUD is making an HD version of Atari, when there is a SNES in the next room.

The whole reason this forum thrived is because we refused to play the pre-packaged MUD in a can. It was exciting to be able to do things with mmud that weren't meant to be done, it was exciting having other people admire the creativity and effort involved.

From the 10 minutes I spent on GreaterMUD, it only looked like somebody installed WG/mmud and stripped the text blocks down. I perused the GreaterMUD forum for a few minutes, looked in the FAQ and News sections, and didn't see anything about what is so much Greater about it (apart from Silverlight and the web page interaction)?

I wanted to avoid posting this type of info in this particular thread as it's way off topic, going to start a new thread to address these comments:

I'd rather try to make a difference than be complacent with the status quo. You say 8 years too late, but I believe that without .NET maturing so much over the past 4-5 years none of this would have been possible (or it would have taken 2-3 times as long to develop). The technology is here now to make remakes like this possible, practical, and more affordable for end users.

Across the various MajorMud related forums I've seen all kinds of posts over the years that take the form of:

"Hey, I've been out of the loop for the past couple years. Has anything changed? Any news on mod 10?"

Each of them has been answered with "no changes" and then they typically walk away for another year or two. I'm trying to change that, and the fact that we still get people coming in making those posts gives me hope that many who have quit over the years may by chance come in and find out about GreaterMUD and get involved again. Will we get all of them back? Not likely, but I'm all for trying. It's better than sitting around doing nothing.
