We all remember a few years ago when a part of Antarctica broke away.



Part of the Ross Ice Shelf broke free and they called it The B15 Antarctic Iceberg. This was the largest recorded iceberg in recent history. It's almost twice the size of Rhode Island.

Ouch. B15 broke up into many pieces. Could cause havoc! More will break off as the shelf melts. It WILL cause sea level to raise. Some people think that floating ice will not change the sea level when it melts.

That is, fresh water ice in fresh water would melt without a change in water level. Fresh ice floats higher in salt water because...

It's the ice on land that will cause a biblical catastrophe when it melts. The release of 30 million cubic kilometres of water would be sick. The ice is so great that it pushes some of the land below sea level. I think we might see giant tsunamis.

What if an iceberg that big hit a large coastal city? You think something that big could take out bridges. If it actually impacted land, it could cause significant tectonic shifting, I would think. Is it close to any land? I couldn't tell from the link.

I doubt it could get that close to land unless iot was deep deep water on the coastline. If enough broke free from the artic it could change the current flow and make the Gulf cooler thus have cooler summers and colder winters.

I'd like that.
