Heh, after much browsing, I was going to go with a flip-top 'till I saw the tape and tissue method:

Have a v12 black (first-day slim model), and couldn't care less about the warranty. It's been almost 2 years, I'm sure it's not covered anymore. Basically, that leaves me with the need for Swap Magic and better media, afaik. Any thoughts?

There's also some "ghost cases" - replacemant cases for slimline ps2's with the clips already installed. Seen them new for $20, and on e-bay for less. I suppose if the tape and tissue method dosen't work, I can always try this out.
Lastly - I've read here and there about v12's having laser problems. Anyone know any specifics? Haven't had problems with mine, not sure if the difficulties occur after modding or what.

yea i have swapmagic 3.3 and a fliptop. the fliptop didn't install right, so i just play with the case off
u can get swapmagic and a free swaptool from foundmy.com
http://www.foundmy.com/oscom/product_info.php?cPath=24_29&products_id=105
the shipping is a little steep, but i've ordered 2 things from them so far, they're reputable.
and as far as getting the game, i use torrentleech.org for 0day ps2 (and other scene releases), lmk if you want an invite.

I almost fell out of my chair at the low price. Then I realized that it's for v3.3, not 3.6 :( I think I'll likely order SM3.6 soon. Why buy FFXII, when I can get many more games for the same price. ;) I think the tissue and tape method will be how I roll, too. It just screams "GHETTO-FAB!".
As far as an invite goes, I sent you a PM.

there's really no difference between the 3.3 and 3.6

Hmmm, I'm assuming 3.6 has more titles enabled, or does it simply including the "coder" addon? I haven't found any solid evidence...
Regardless, I've found 3.6 for $30.13 after shipping, which isn't that bad. Not sure what shipping would be for the link you provided, but assuming it's ~$10 then I'm only paying an extra $5, though I wouldn't get the "tool" shown as coming with v3.3. But, as I stated before, I'm just going to open 'er up and tape the shit down.
Now....the waiting game. November's a 3-paycheck month for me, which is the good news, but I'd really like to get a car on the road before dropping cash on entertainment. Though I suppose I could just skip buying my next sack and order this shit....hmmm....
