router - simple question [Archive] - ForumsHQ

Post by ari »

For the network unsavvy like myself, any tips on speeding up net access after installing a router? I just bought a netgear router, did the setup wizard, and of course I'm lagging a bit now.

Also, it has wireless access that I'd like to turn off. Skimmed the admin page but couldn't find the option. It's a netgear WGR614 rev 6. Will eventually have 3 computers and a PS2 hooked up to it.

Any brief comments/suggestions are welcome, tnx!

I've never had a router decrease my bandwidth in the least. You should not be experiencing any lag or packet loss through a router period. There is a problem if you are "lagging" due to your router. What are you lagging on? What are your download speeds before and after the router?

IMHO: Always by a linksys.

You need to connect to the web page of the router, which is probably located at http://192.168.1.1 and go from there on your wireless issue. You should be able to disable wireless from there.

Google says that router has speed issues. here's a link to a forum that might help. Though i'm not sure what this 'extream' service is they talk about...

I own one of these myself. it's a v3 but here is the lowdown on the wireless.

Enable Wireless Router Radio

The Wireless Access PointRouter of this router can be enabled or disabled to allow wireless access. The wireless icon on the front of the router will also display the current status of the Wireless Access Point to let you know if it is disabled or enabled. If Enabled, wireless stations will be able to access the Internet. If Disabled, wireless stations will not be able to access the Internet.

I found this setting in the admin page.

Advanced >> Wireless Settings >> Enable/Disable Wireless Router Radio
